Ed. Note: Additional closures are to be expected through December 19th.

From a press release:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced it will close the eastbound and westbound lanes of H Street NE, between North Capitol Street and 5th Street NE, from Friday, December 13 at 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. on Saturday, December 14, 2013. The closure is to allow for the delivery of the first streetcar from the testing facility in Anacostia to H Street NE to begin the functional testing process.

The streetcar will be delivered on a flatbed truck from the Testing and Commissioning Site on South Capitol Street SE to H Street NE. Once on the corridor, the vehicle will be unloaded between 3rd Street NE and 5th Street NE and pushed into the tuck track on the Hopscotch Bridge. Unloading the streetcar will take approximately three hours.

1365 H Street, NE

From an email:

“It’s fitting, we think, that the newest addition to H Street comes from the oldest CrossFit affiliate in the DC Metro area: CrossFit DC. It’s with great pride that we announce the opening of our second CrossFit affiliate inside the historic 4500 square-foot space at 1365 H Street NE, formerly occupied by H Street Playhouse.

CrossFit DC was the first CrossFit affiliate to open in the DC-Metro area back in 2005 – one of the first 50 in the world, actually. But beyond our history, what really sets us apart is how we apply our knowledge and experience. We emphasize coaching and community above all else. Everyone who comes through our doors is treated as an equal, regardless of background or ability, and workouts are designed to be accessible to members from all walks of life. What we’ll bring to H Street is far more than just a gym; ours is a professional strength and conditioning training center with an emphasis on fun, challenging workouts and community through fitness.

We anticipate opening our doors in early Spring of 2014, and look forward to becoming a great neighbor and a vital part of the H Street community – whether by sponsoring charity events, partnering with local businesses, or simply maintaining a high-quality facility that channels the vibe of the neighborhood.”

From DDOT:

“The District Department of Transportation (DDOT) has announced the DC Streetcar construction team will implement intermittent closures of the eastbound and westbound lanes of H Street, NE between North Capitol Street, NE and 5th Street, NE starting on Friday, December 6, 2013 through Thursday, December 19, 2013. The closures are needed for the installation of overhead catenary system (OCS) and to complete the permanent traffic barrier at the Western Turnaround.

To mitigate traffic impacts, crews will attempt to maintain one direction of traffic; however, there will be occasional simultaneous eastbound and westbound closures. With the exception of a two-day period for the installation of contact wire (1/2 day closure in each direction), crews will attempt to limit the closures to one direction per day.

For any combination of closures, local traffic will be permitted access to/from the Union Station garage and Kaiser loading dock entrance. Traffic Control Officers (TCO) will be present to assist with pedestrian movements, to direct vehicles in and out of the garage, and to control traffic at H Street, NE and North Capitol Street, NE.

Frozen Tropics noted and a reader also sends word that the Pho Bar and Grill space on H Street is now for lease:

“Approximately 1,800 sqaure feet available for 10,500 per month plus passthrough charges. No tenant improvements needed. Restaurant on 1st floor and bar on 2nd floor. Liquor License is included. The H Street Corridor/North Capitol Hill area has established itself as one of the best submarkets in DC for the restaurants and bar business. The renaissance of H Street is exemplified by the recent Whole Foods lease announcement and the City’ s recent investment of $65M in aesthetic improvements to streetscape. Former Pho Bar Restaurant Property Type: Restaurant Available: For Lease Address: 1360 H Street NE”

In early October we noted that Pho Bar and Grill had closed for “renovation and training”.  We judged them back in Dec. 2012 (they opened in Oct. 2011.)

NCinDC writes:

“A commercial building located at 804 H Street NE in the Near Northeast (H Street corridor) of Washington, D.C. Built in 1890, the property originally served as a private residence. It was later converted into Peoples Drug Store No. 5 where apparently they always sold the best. (here’s additional historic photos of this Peoples location) The left photo was taken sometime in the 1910s by the National Photo Company (via the Library of Congress). The building on the far left in the old photo was replaced with a bank building in 1921 while the building on the far right was probably destroyed during the 1968 riots.”

I spotted some of the warning violations last weekend, real ticketing starts Dec. 1st. From DC Streetcar:

“District law prohibits parking, stopping or standing a vehicle on or within a streetcar guide-way or adjacent to a streetcar platform. A vehicle in violation of this law shall be subject to fine and removal or impounding. The streetcar guide-way is defined as the area where streetcars operate, including the concrete track slab the tracks rest on.

Streetcar vehicles will be on the H Street/Benning Road Corridor soon to test and train for passenger service. Cars parked outside of the lines, including illegally double-parked vehicles, will impede the streetcar, delay service along the line, and result in a ticket and/or tow for your vehicle.

Real ticketing will start in December.

Be safe and smart when parking, and remember: STAY WITHIN THE LINES.

For more information call 855-413-2954.”

“Restaurant serving an array of appetizers entrees, burgers and sandwiches with seats for 200 patrons. Total occupancy load of 400. Entertainment endorsement to include dancing and cover charge and summer garden with 50 seats.”

Updates as construction progresses.
