“Dear PoPville,

Kenyon between 13th and 14th was closed for a possible shooting around 4 pm yesterday, ironically the same time you posted about the recovered gun. The Harriet Tubman school was on lockdown, but haven’t heard anything else about it.”

MPD confirms to me shots were fired:

Located several casings and 2 vehicles struck. The only information that we have so far from the community was that they saw a dark vehicle speed away but unknown if that was a suspect or witness or possible target. Detectives were on scene searching for video and recovering forensics.”

Updates when/if more is known.

From MPD:

“Last night (Monday March 18), at approximately 8:15pm, patrol officers in the Third District observed two individuals in the 2900 block of 14th Street NW engaged in what appeared to be a narcotics transaction. As the officers approached the subjects, they fled on foot. Officers were able to apprehend one of the subjects, an adult male from SE Washington, after a short foot pursuit. During a search incident to his arrest, a 40 caliber handgun with an extended magazine was recovered from the suspect. (more…)

Like the fountains, unfortunately this is a question we discuss annually.

“Dear PoPville,

Is there an update on the fencing/grass revitalization of the southern half of the mall in Meridian Hill Park? A couple years ago, NPS fenced off the northern half of the mall and the grass made a comeback, but this year neighborhood dog owners have been using the fenced off area as a dog park and the area has become more of a dirt pit than it already was. It would be nice to have grass up there again, so more people could enjoy the park.

Although it’s unclear, it seems like the plan was to fence off the southern half to minimize foot traffic so the grass could come back; it also seems unlikely that NPS intended to make the area a dog park, considering that signs in the park say dogs are required to be on a leash at all times. But, until NPS prevents dog owners from letting their dogs off leash within the fenced area, I don’t see how the grass will have a chance to take root again.”

3410 11th Street, NW between Park and Monroe

Changes continue for 11th Street in Columbia Heights. Earlier this week we learned that Maple would be closing at the end of the month and be replaced by an Italian restaurant. Of course when we first heard that KBC and then Good Silver had closed, folks were, rightly, super bummed. Time to get excited again!!
