redline

Thanks to all who sent links. The Washington Business Journal reported:

A jury has awarded a former employee of Chinatown’s Redline sports bar a total of $687,000 in damages after finding that she was the victim of discrimination.

Hardin said her termination was “part of a broader scheme of discriminatory exclusion perpetrated by Redline and Dadlani,” according to her lawsuit.“In pursuit of defendants’ vision of Redline as maintaining a white, homogeneous customer base, Redline and Dadlani implemented discriminatory policies that excluded African-Americans from working in visible positions and denied African-American customers equal access to the establishment.”

Looks like plans for a strip club, then cigar lounge have now become plans for The Liberator. A new liquor license placard posted out front says:

“Multi-level restaurant and bar featuring a fusion of modern Irish and European cuisines with a seating capacity for 370 patrons. Total Occupancy Load of 470. Requesting an Entertainment Endorsement.”

A reader reports:

“Looks like the new concept, BOE, for the old Oya space at 777 9th Street has been unveiled. Their twitter feed calls it “Refined American Comfort Fare”.

Doesn’t look like a bad happy hour.”

Ah good timing – I literally just got a press release:

“After more than a decade, what was formerly OYA will reopen as BOE on January 15th, 2016! BOE features refined American comfort fare and traditional favorites with an upgraded twist; an honest and flavor-forward approach to classic American dishes. Experience BOE’s Bourbon Lavender Sour or Apricot Rum Shandy craft cocktails, or indulge in Chef Avinesh Rana’s Cornmeal Dusted Fried Oysters or Pulled Pork Shoulders with Barley Fried Rice.

Situated in an interior epitomizing rustic elegance, BOE’s picturesque environment is a variety of beautiful wood and stone, complimented by soft gemstone colors and the contrast of textures, with the juxtaposition of minimalist modern chic . Like its sister restaurant, SEI, BOE looks forward to being a local Penn Quarter favorite in 2016!”

Menus after the jump. (more…)

My favorite comment from IntangibleArts when we judged Mehak back in 2010:

“I call this one decent “utility-grade” curry. That is, when you wake up & your first thought is I MUST HAVE A CURRY FIX TODAY, like a classic addict (guilty!), it’s a suitable methodone. Not the best but far from wretched. But then, I’d rather have a bad curry than a GOOD anything else.

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with “middle of the road”… ask any possum on the B/W parkway.

what?”

“Uberpool w/ Sarah Jan 3 around 2pm: My buddy and I shared a ride with ‘Sarah’ — she joined the ride in Shaw-area and my buddy and I got off first near Gallery Place. It was unfortunate, my buddy sat in between us yet I felt we still managed to steal conversation and glances around his big head (heart you, buddy). Telling was our longing stare into each other’s eyes as the car door was shut and uberpool car sped away. I should have been quicker and asked for her number, but no.”

Update Found!

Please keep a lookout for:

“His name is Louie, he is a year and a half old west highland terrier, about 20 pounds. He has a red collar with a silver name tag. He was last seen running by the Gallery Place/Chinatown metro stop at 7th and H st NW. Louie is very shy and scares easily by loud noises so he may be hiding. He is a very fast runner so chasing after him may just cause him to run away.”
