From Esquire’s Best New Restaurants in America, 2019: “#1 Seven Reasons

Ten minutes north of the White House and its sour, divisive rhetoric, immigrants are throwing a party. Unfettered joy radiates from inside Seven Reasons as you stand outside the front door, and once you enter and sit down, that joy makes itself known–proudly, defiantly–in the riot of flavors and hues that chef Enrique Limardo sends out from the kitchen. Limardo and several members of his team come from Venezuela, a country in the midst of collapse, and yet the Latin American food and cocktails at Seven Reasons–a mountain of black rice topped with prawns and pork cheeks, a salad in which the summery tang of tomatoes has been concentrated into cubes of jelly, a platter of hamachi tiradito whose pink and green splashes of salmon roe and jalapeño could hang in an art gallery–serve up jubilation as a remedy for pain and color as a cure for the blues. Is there almost too much packed into each bite? No one’s complaining. More-is-more extravagance is what makes Seven Reasons a fiesta you never want to stop.”

From an email:

This Thursday (11/28), Seven Reasons will be hosting a special Thanksgiving celebration with a special menu created by Executive Chef Enrique Limardo. (more…)

14th and W Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Up 14th there are several intersections where the crosswalk is now gone due to repaving (and repaying, and so forth). Any intel on when they’ll be restored? It’s hazardous as is because cars can’t tell where to stop and block the entire crosswalk area.”

On Saturday the Florida Avenue Grill posted:

“We regret to inform you of the passing of Lacey C. Wilson, Jr., the former owner of the Florida Avenue Grill @floridaavegrill. In 1970, he purchased the Grill from his father Lacey Sr who founded the Grill in 1944. Lacey served 13 years in the U.S. Marine Corps ultimately as a Gunnery Sergeant and was a Karate Grandmaster. He taught martial arts to numerous black youth in DC at a time when few saw the value in it. He famously defied National Guard orders to leave and defended the Grill with a shotgun for three days and nights during the uprising that followed Dr King’s killing. The Grill was still firebombed but he was able to put the fire out.
.
He continued to serve as guide a mentor to our current owner Imar Hutchins. It is due to Mr. Lacey’s determination and spirit that the Grill is now able to celebrate 75 years of serving the DC community. Mr. Lacey was 83 years old.” (more…)

From DC9:

“The Holidays are about giving and celebrating. They are about overindulgence and spending time with friends both new and old.

In that spirit DC9 is bringing back to life the much lauded Palena Burger!

It’s been five years since the acclaimed Palena closed its doors and the beloved burger graced the tables of DC dinners, and we miss it. Amber Bursik, chef at DC9, whom cooked at Palena for several years and cooked many of those Palena burgers herself thought this was the way she and DC9 could spread some holiday cheer to their guests. Massive news from Washingtonian:

“The U Street Corridor wine bar and restaurant will close on Sunday, November 24, after 12 years of service. The silver lining: owner Paul Carlson says he plans to transform the space–which includes a front patio and rear outdoor bar– into a new concept with his team from nearby all-day cafe and cocktail bar, the Royal.”

Vinoteca launched the local wine bar craze here in 2007. In 2014 they briefly closed for “a little facelift” and in 2018 we heard that they had big renovations plans I don’t think ever happened. Stay tuned for updates as we learn more about the new plans but be sure to stop by before this Sunday if you want one last sip.

Update from Vinoteca:

“Friends, loyal guests, and everyone who has graced us with their presence over the last 12 years. It was 12 years ago this month that we opened our doors, and it is this Sunday that we close this chapter and prepare for the next. Thanks to all who have supported us over the years. And stay tuned to a very exciting new project coming from @paulcarlson05 + @theroyal_dc team in the new year.
.
For now, please come say your farewells starting this Wednesday, with a very special final Flamenco show, and capping off with an all-day brunch on Sunday, “’til the eggs are gone and the Champagne bottles run dry!” (more…)
