“Dear PoPville,

I have been coming to Blind Dog Cafe since it opened and have always loved the food. Expensive but worth it for the awesome sandwiches and salads. Now the salads are off the menu and the quality of the food has gone way down. The most recent sandwich I had was honestly terrible – slimy packaged turkey (not fresh roasted as it used to be), thin bacon (not thick roasted on-site), gross shaved iceburg lettuce and tomato, weird tasting sauce…it was a mess and tasted off, it wasn’t worth $5 let alone $10. I’m really disappointed to see Blind Dog cutting corners on food quality when that was one of their trademarks. What happened?”

New awnings are up at the former Newtown (and Tabaq before them) space on U Street for Hawthorne. From an email:

“We’ll be shooting for a grand opening next weekend, with perhaps a soft opening/live bar training this weekend to give friends and neighbors a chance to see the space and check us out. Hawthorne has 4 floors and a basement, including four bar areas, two dining rooms, and an incredible glass rooftop with a 360 degree view of the city and monuments. We’re excited to announce that Stephen Boillon, formerly of Dino and Mothership/El Floridano will be our Executive Chef. Our menu will have classic tavern fare with a emphasis on mussels. We’re excited to join and be a part of this vibrant neighborhood.”

Ed. Note: While their website isn’t live yet – they clearly have a great sense of humor. Looking forward to seeing how this turns out.

Most recently in August we noted that the Florida Avenue Grill had added outdoor seating (obviously more substantial in the warmer months than what’s pictured here but check out the sweet table below.) Now they’ve posted a liquor license placard too:

“Soul food restaurant. Total Occupancy Load of 50. Sidewalk Café with seating for 36.”

Hours of alcohol consumption are listed as Sunday through Thursday 10am-12am, Friday and Saturday 10am-2am and sidewalk cafe hours are listed as Sunday through Saturday 8am-9pm.

For those who haven’t been in a while you can see their menu here.

A reader writes:

“I found this dog tonight at 14th and Florida Ave NW. She is without tags, probably about 2 years old, and I’m guessing a yellow lab/retriever mix (she has short, light golden hair). She was soaking wet , so may have been out in the rain for awhile.”

From a press release:

“Washington, D.C.’s thriving hospitality scene along the U Street Corridor is receiving a new addition that is a nod to the past.  Public House Collective, a New York-based hospitality management and consulting company, and operators of two New York City nightlife destinations, The Rum House and Ward III, announced today the opening of Quarter+Glory, marking its first venture outside of the New York market. Quarter+Glory is slated to open in mid-December at the corner of 14th and U Streets.

Conceptualized by Public House Collective’s principals, President, Ryan P. Burke and Chief Creative Officer, Kenneth B. McCoy, Quarter+Glory will be a modern take on the classic American watering holes of earlier generations; where all walks of life convened over carefully crafted drinks and good conversation in a convivial atmosphere.  Robert Yealu, who was recently named to D.C.’s first-ever “30 Under 30” list from Zagat, will serve as General Manager.

Quarter+Glory embodies the spirit of creative types of a past era coming together — whether it be journalists, poets, actors, novelists, or just the neighborhood raconteur – to converse about their individual crafts and the unique creative process that connected them. In that vein, Quarter+Glory borrows its name from an alleged secret New York literary society said to be started by famed playwright Eugene O’Neill. As lore would have it, the members would gather in old waterfront bars and conclude each meet by raising their glasses and pledging, “give me Quarter and Glory!”

“Quarter+Glory is truly an authentic ode to the bars of old New York that my father owned and operated, where folks from a cross section of society gathered to share great drinks and conversation with whomever happened to stride up to the bar,” said McCoy.  “We chose D.C. as the place to take our first step outside of New York because the city has such a distinctive energy that feels very much in tune with our own.  I think it’s fair to say that Washington, D.C. also captures the essence of Quarter+Glory, ‘Dignified for the Discerning and Bold for the Courageous.’”

At the core of Quarter+Glory is a menu of 23 cocktails, comprising both classics and house originals, which will rotate seasonally. (more…)
