“What happened to Blind Dog Cafe?”

“Dear PoPville,

I have been coming to Blind Dog Cafe since it opened and have always loved the food. Expensive but worth it for the awesome sandwiches and salads. Now the salads are off the menu and the quality of the food has gone way down. The most recent sandwich I had was honestly terrible – slimy packaged turkey (not fresh roasted as it used to be), thin bacon (not thick roasted on-site), gross shaved iceburg lettuce and tomato, weird tasting sauce…it was a mess and tasted off, it wasn’t worth $5 let alone $10. I’m really disappointed to see Blind Dog cutting corners on food quality when that was one of their trademarks. What happened?”

Not to mention it takes 20 minutes to get your food. Desperate need for good/fastish breakfast places in the area.

What’s wrong with the greasy spoon Florida Grill?

      • Truxton Thomas

Well according to a comment this week from someone who was into Florida Ave. Grill before it was cool, there are never any tables because of millennials on their cell phones. I guess nobody goes there anymore because it’s too crowded.

        Sitdown v. take-out

I’ve also noticed a serious decline. This follows a period when they were more than once out of bread. I used to love this place, and wish it would get back on track. No house made sodas anymore either.

  • Truxton Thomas

I haven’t noticed a change in the mushroom breakfast sandwich, though the service is indeed painfully slow.

So slow! It’s almost worth it to walk to the Coffee Bar or the new Compass instead.

    Those Kardashians ruin every place!

  • jeffykay

I went the other day and the place was filled with dogs in diamond collars. I couldn’t even get to the counter to order my greasy sammie.

i’ve never been there, but why don’t you just ask them what’s going on?

I know when that hot dog bling

    • FridayGirl

      Hahahaha…..

    • I’m laughing so hard my dog is concerned.
      Thank you!

        LOL!

    • AJSE

THAT CAN ONLY MEAN ONE THING

  • That sucks to hear, they were always great back when I used to live not too far away, but I haven’t been in probably 2 years. I never would have classified them as expensive back then either.

He’s aware of the drop in service. The owner also owns Union Kitchen and he’s been putting most of his energy into that. He mentioned that he wants to spend more time and energy at Blind Dog, but he can’t at the moment.

  • J Street

My one and only experience there was a few years ago. I liked the ambiance and had no complaints about the service but the food was just terrible.

  • elbeech

This is such a bummer to read! I love(d) their sandwiches and housemade soda.

  • siz

maaaan, that sucks. i haven’t been in about 3 or 4 months (tried to day after thanksgiving, but they were closed), but this is one of my favorite lunch spots in the city! they used to get this INCREDIBLE bread that literally prompted me to ask them where it came from (at the time a baker at union kitchen) that they don’t have anymore but…damn. last time i was there, they still seemed to be on their game.
    .
please PLEASE tell me they at least still have the chocolate chip cookies. that would be a legit tragedy.

    • funkyParade

they dumped the baker who originated the chocolate chip cookies. :(

    • BMouse

I once had a chocolate chip cookie fresh from the oven. it was incredible.

I used to go to Blind Dog constantly, but every time I went, it was more swamped by bros and basics, camping out without buying stuff, and helping keep their margins high. Nothing in DC stays indie and high quality any more.

    • Anon

“…indie…” – I don’t think that means what you think it means.

Such sad news, I wish they had decided to bring it back to what we knew and loved. Hope the popup goes well.
