From an email:

“This is your chance to own a piece of DC jazz history. Everything from Bohemian Caverns in DC is being sold at online only auction from the drum set to the sound equipment and barstools.

The sold out shows for this Friday and Saturday night will be the last at Bohemian Caverns. Once the last songs have played the doors will shut for good and everything inside the basement level caverns will be sold at online auction along with the restaurant equipment from the ground floor, and even the disco ball from the third floor night club.

Turntable

There is a little bit of everything in the online auction including five TVs, turntables, stage lighting, speakers, microphones, the keyboard and drum set, restaurant equipment, lounge sofas, patio furniture and more. Everything is happening fast, and by 5 p.m. on Wednesday the 30th the place will be completely empty. (more…)

Over the summer a reader sent some scuttlebutt saying a new coffee spot, likely a Philz coffee, would be coming to the new Manhattan Development. They were close – instead of San Fransisco it’ll be more Philly coffee – La Colombe. Washington Business Journal reports:

1346 Florida Ave. NW: Interior fit-out of space in this Douglas Development building, its Manhattan Laundry project, for a new 2,500-square-foot La Colombe cafe.”

This will be the third La Colombe in DC after the one in Blagden Alley and Chinatown.

2016-Funk-Parade

From a press release:

DC’s Funk Parade and Grammy-nominated local artist Kokayi put out a call for donations Tuesday to Washington residents: send us your sounds of the city.

The sounds are for a collaborative city-wide composition project, “Sounds of the City,” to create a song for DC, which Kokayi will compose with the donated sounds.

Washingtonians are asked to record sounds for the project and send them using their smartphones. Instructions are at http://soundsofthe.city. (more…)

A very interesting and sad story from the City Paper:

“Legendary U Street jazz club Bohemian Caverns will close at the end of March.”

You can see the calendar of their last scheduled events here. And you can read some more of their history here.

So where will you listen to Jazz now? Sad to see how many spots we briefly discussed in 2008 are no longer around.

Pizzeria Vetri’s website says:

“Keeping in line with the Vetri Family’s signature style of only utilizing the finest and freshest ingredients from the farm, sea and market, and making just about everything in-house from scratch—including the salumi, sauces and dough—Pizzeria Vetri features a feast of seasonal pizza pies ranging from the classic Margherita with basil, mozzarella and tomato sauce to the Salsiccia with fennel sausage, roasted fennel, tomato and mozzarella. In addition to the thin-crust selection, Pizzeria Vetri also serves up a thicker, rectangle “pizza of the day.”

While Pizzeria Vetri’s custom-made, wood-fired Renato oven cranks out pizzas to order that’s certainly not the only thing it can do. A true workhorse, the oven also produces roasted salads, calzones and the dish Philadelphia Inquirer restaurant critic Craig Laban proclaimed was his “single greatest morsel” of 2013, the Rotolo, a crispy pinwheel of pizza dough filled with ricotta and house-made mortadella topped with pistachio pesto.

Save room for dessert as a decadent oven-baked Nutella Pizza topped with marshmallow, and a selection of seasonal cookies and soft-serve ice cream are available to order. For beverages, Pizzeria Vetri offers a selection of wines on tap, hand-bottled cocktails and craft beers.”

You can see their menu here.

Funk Department officials said this year’s Funk Parade is expected to draw over 70,000 residents to the U Street neighborhood to enjoy over 150 hours of music and dance programming, along with interactive art activations like: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I walked by and the city installed metal spikes around all the sit-able spots on the outside of the Reeves Center (specifically 14 and V corner). Helluva message to literally tack on to Barry’s building that roustabouts and folks experiencing homelessness aren’t welcome in this part of town anymore. Makes me furious at the city.”

Ed. Note: A couple weeks ago we spoke about potential ATM fraud in Logan Circle.

“Dear PoPville,

Both my wife and I have had our Debit/Visa cards compromised in this week. The cards are linked to separate accounts, and the dodgy charges appeared on consecutive days.

My wife incurred two charges in Canada, and I incurred three: 2 in Canada (Mac’s Convenience Store, and Edinburgh Liquors) and one that I have not been able to trace successfully, but it is likely a Hookah store in Canada.

I have just been into our local branch of TD Bank (P street, NW) to get a new card and spoke with the Manager (who is consistently excellent). He told me that TD Bank has had no data breach, but said that he has had a number of customers from the area come into the Bank this week to dispute charges and obtain new cards. As a consequence he suspects there is a store, or stores, in the Columbia Heights/U Street area that has/have been skimming cards. (more…)
