wydown
1924 14th Street, NW just south of U Street

From an email:

“The Wydown recently expanded its menu to offer wine, beer, and cocktails – and we would like DC to know about it!

*The Wydown’s new menu features 8 wines, 3 beers, and 4 craft cocktails.

**Beer, wine, and mimosas are available starting at 9am and cocktails are available starting at 4pm daily. We have extended hours to remain open until 8:30 Sunday through Thursday, and 10:30pm on Friday and Saturday. Coffee and espresso will remain available at all times.

*The cocktails are made from fresh, made-in-house ingredients, including a gin and house tonic, an old fashioned with house coffee bitters and cascara syrup, and a seasonal punch with gin, fresh pineapple syrup, oleo saccharum, lemon and Moroccan mint tea.

*The wine offerings include white, red, rose, and sparkling options. We are particularly enjoying the Evodia, a full bodied, fruity garnacha from Spain and the peachy, medium bodied White Hall Viognier, from a local Virginia vineyard.”

Anyone sample the goods yet? What’s the early word?

The stuff legends are made out of – February 7th, 2009

It is no secret that I love this place. They’ve been through a lot over the years and come out the other side smiling, well, they’ve come out the other side as solid as ever. Congrats to the whole team who are really way too modest – to maintain this level of great for so many years is not an easy task. The Street changes, Solly’s of course changes with it but at the end of the day remains true its soul – a no bullshit, good bar.

From a press release:

“On Sunday, October 9th Solly’s Tavern will celebrate 10 years on U Street with an anniversary party starting at 8:30 pm at 1942 11th St. NW that will feature the DJ-stylings of “Tony T” (Tony Tomelden of The Pug fame).

The tavern, that was once described by the Washington Post as “A cozy neighborhood dive with cheap PBR and friendly bartenders” is celebrating its 10th anniversary by hosting a party that will raise money of local youth non-profits. Proceeds from Solly’s commemorative anniversary t-shirts, silent auctioned items and all bar sales will go to support two local youth charities; Washington Jesuit Academy and Hoops Sagrado. (more…)

On Monday I begged and pleaded, Today they have listened. La Colombe finally opening Manhattan Laundry location on Flordia Ave tomorrow (Saturday)!

img_7092

From a press release:

“La Colombe will open its third Washington D.C.-area café on Saturday, October 1, in the historic Manhattan Laundry building, located at 1328-1348 Florida Ave NW. The leading coffee company, known for ethical, long-term trade practices with growers, is committed to a vision of bringing better coffee to more people.

The 1,200 square-foot café preserves the historic aesthetic and features of the space with exposed brick and high ceilings while focusing on customer flow and service. The new café creates a welcoming environment for the neighborhood to gather. The three-building Manhattan Laundry structure, which is on The National Register of Historic Places, originally housed the traction facility for a streetcar company. Later the structure became a printing plant and it was converted into a laundry in 1905. This industrial space attracted La Colombe, a company which has a passion for preserving raw and authentic buildings steeped in history. (more…)

A reader reports:

“Happened right at the end of the presidential debates at Camden Roosevelt on 16th and V NW. Neighbors heard tires screeching and then a loud crash like a trash truck emptying a dumpster. I can’t tell if there is any structural damage to the building, but his car is straddling the surrounding fence. The ambulance is still here, so I doubt the driver is seriously injured. The assumption is a drunk driver, but I have no way of knowing that for sure.

Update since my last email: We saw who we assumed was the driver walking from one ambulance to another. He seemed unsteady, but I still couldn’t tell if that was because he was under the influence or shaken up from the incident. Our building appears to be fine–the fence took the bulk of the impact and two window frames in our gym appear to be slightly damaged.”
