“Dear PoPville,

Speaking of wildlife around town, noticed this camera yesterday. The top has a sticker saying “wildlife camera”. It’s about 6″ off the ground so not looking for moose ;) It’s in our alleyway connecting Rhode Island Avene NW to Vermont Avenue NW. Lived in DC since 2002 and haven’t seen one of these before.”

I’m guessing it’s either one or the other of these: (more…)

Thanks to Dan for sending.

From a press release:

“This month, Community Three will launch the 9½ Street Initiative–a collection of residences, work spaces and cultural beacons that celebrate the District of Columbia’s rich artistic character and entrepreneurial spirit. “This is a monumental achievement for us, the neighborhood and the city–ten years in the making,” said Grant Epstein, Community Three’s President.

Located along 9½ Street, at U Street and Vermont Avenue in DC’s historic Shaw neighborhood, the 9½ Street Initiative is the result of a decade‐long effort and collaboration between Community Three, the District of Columbia’s Office of the Deputy Mayor for Economic Development and the African American Civil War Museum. The effort contains the redevelopment and new construction of approximately 133,000 square feet adjacent to the U Street Metro Station. (more…)

From a press release:

“Gogi Yogi, from the team behind Duke’s Grocery and Duke’s Counter, will be the first Korean restaurant in Washington where food is cooked on an open-air grill embedded in each dining table. The new restaurant and bar opens later this week at 1921 8th Street NW.

The menu begins with an assortment of shared appetizers from the kitchen, then focuses on meats, poultry, pork and seafood to be grilled at the tables. Special attention is paid to Banchan, the assortment of Korean appetizers served with the meal. The bar program features 12 varieties of Soju and Korean-inspired cocktails, alongside both Korean and local beers. “We have some great options to enjoy and the menu, just like at Duke’s, is going to always evolve. Beyond staples like Bulgogi and Galbi, there is a lot more of Korean fare to explore,” said Daniel Kramer, Managing Partner. (more…)

1414 9th Street, NW

Greg reports: “I tried to order from Imm Thai on 9th this past weekend and the phone has been disconnected. Walked past it yesterday and the lights are all off and there’s a big For Lease sign above the windows.”

Since Vegetate closed in 2009 the space has become an Ethiopian restaurant called Cafe Eagle then Taqueria Mexicana then an Ethiopian Sports Bar and Restaurant named Eagle (again) then was renamed Northern Restaurant.  In July of 2012 Secret Lounge and Sports Bar opened up but closed in Nov. 2013. In February 2017 Choa Ku closed after opening in June 2016. In July 2017 Imm Thai opened.

Thanks to Robert for passing on Shaw Rez’s tweet: “Once again, 1414 9th Street is for lease; Imm Thai has closed. Any thoughts on what would work here? Layout seems to have proven less than optimal for a restaurant.”

UPDATE: “At around 10pm last night, an individual coming from a nearby establishment punched and broke one of our windows. He injured himself and tried to flee the scene. MPD and EMS were quick to arrive and we were told the individual would be arrested after receiving medical attention. We would like to thank our DC Fire Department for coming by today to thoroughly clean the sidewalks with high-pressured water hoses.” – 801 Ownership

2012 9th Street, NW

Thanks to a reader for sending: “Was just at gaslight and Sunday is [was] the last day. They are closing for a renovation.”

I spoke with the owner to make sure it was indeed closing for a renovation and not a “renovation”. Fortunately it is indeed a proper renovation, they are “integrating one of the retail bays that’s under the rolldown door.” If all goes well they’ll reopen September 18th. Stay tuned.
