“Dear PoPville,

Doesn’t look like Lunch Yaki lasted very long. They opened back in early August and have already changed concepts.

I walked by earlier today and the Lunch Yaki sign has been replaced by a new Korean chicken wing spot named “KOCHIX.” Looks like they’re back to serving bibimbap, bulgogi, and a random assortment of steak and burger subs and fried fish and shrimp, in addition to the selection of Korean chicken wings.”

Shaw ANC Rep Kevin Chapple emailed some phenomenal news for Shaw yesterday:

“I am happy to announce that after years of being a vacant blight in the community, the building at 1547 – 7th St will be transformed into a world renowned restaurant. A lease has been signed with chef Richard Sandoval’s restaurant group. The restaurant at 1547 – 7th Street will be one of his El Centro brand.

The laundromat at 1535 – 7th Street will be closing and a coffee shop will take its place.”

Ed. Note: I asked Kevin if he could share more info on the coffee shop and while the owners are still trademarking their name the space will be an “independent coffee shop, i.e. not apart of any chain”.

Kevin also shares that Ivy & Coney will be opening in a few weeks.

And all this is addition to all the good stuff coming to City Market at O.

Thanks to all who sent emails about the progress at Dunya:

“A Mediterranean restaurant serving tapas and high end cocktails with a seating capacity for 150 patrons and total load of 150. Request an entertainment endorsement with live performances jazz for brunch or private events and summer garden with a seating capacity for 25 patrons.”

In June we were happily surprised to see that they were adding a sweet roof deck. Today, a peek in the window reveals they should be opening any day now:

Dunya’s website still says coming soon. I’ll be sure to update when an exact date is announced.

Quite a bit of progress from March of this year:

At the end of Sept. I spoke with some workers who said pizza was coming back to 634 Florida Ave, NW where Italy Pizza used to be before they closed in May. Glad to see it wasn’t just a rumor. Hopefully the pizza at Aroma Pizzeria will be as good (or better) as Italy Pizza used to be (especially when they sold by the slice.) We’ll revisit for a proper judging after they’ve been open a few months.

7th and O Looking North East

My tour of jaw dropping gigantic new developments continues – next up is City Market at O and even in this early stage it doesn’t disappoint.  First here’s a few details from the folks at City Market at O:

“The Numbers:
90,000 square feet of retail, including 78K Giant

Dates:
Giant Opening: November 22
Initial Apartment move-ins – Dec – Jan
Cambria Hotel Opening: late spring

The entire project is Leed Silver, from the Giant to the hotel to the residences

The Shaw neighborhood: Roadside worked to keep the look and feel of the neighborhood in a number of ways. They opened up 8th street to continue the tree lined street through the center of City Market at O, they buried all loading for the Giant, hotel and retail/restaurants underneath the project; and they worked with older residents to ensure they had the opportunity to stay in the area by building an affordable 90-unit residence. This is a rare opportunity for seniors to enjoy intergenerational, modern apartment living in a desirable area of the city at an affordable cost.”

Lots more info on the project here.

One of the coolest new apartments in the District:

The owners of Ivy and Coney share the good news and plans for their $85,000 Great Streets Initiative Grant:

“I just wanted to tell you the good news we got today regarding Ivy and Coney, the next great, fabulous opulent, little dive bar in DC. We’ve just been funded to build a huge roof deck at the bar which we hope to have open a few short months after the interior opens! This will mean a 50 to 60 person deck with a fully retractable glass roof, and more importantly, a greatly expanded food options (with a menu that is undecided thus far).

In other news, at KBC (3410 11th Street, NW) we’ve been getting some concerned phone calls regarding our expansion and whether we are open. While the plans are still very much in the works to add a second floor, WE ARE ABSOLUTELY OPEN. We will have to shut down for improvements at some point, but we will give our customers plenty of advance notice when we settle on a date.”
