A reader reports:

“Been watching this space (and block!) transform a lot over the past two years. Barrilito quietly opened last week in the old location of El Sol on 14th and Randolph, one store front up from Little Coco’s. Little disappointed only because we have so many amazing taco and torta places in the neighborhood already. But I wish them all the best!”

Anyone happen to take an early taste?

Ben reports:

“New sign (and name reversal?) to complement their newly painted facade. I also noticed they are redoing their ceilings with wood paneling and might be prepping for a mural on the incoming wall.

Think they are trying to rival Mezcalero? Fortunately despite the upgrades Habanero’s tacos are still amazing…”

Thanks to Jake for also sending a shot of the new sign – note the “99% Mexican”:

A reader reports:

“I recently noticed that “Tienda La Union,” next to the Red Derby, is shuttering it’s doors. The sign written in Spanish says the store is closing after 30 years in business.”

Ed. Note: I haven’t heard any rumors about who’s taking over but I feel like a business that had been open for 30 years deserves some props and a fond farewell before we start talking replacements… Nevertheless the show must go on so we’ll be sure to update when we learn of the future plans for the space.

From an email:

“While we can’t prevent every act of aggression or stop every divisive national policy, one thing we can do is let our diverse neighbors know that we stand together in solidarity.

The March will start at Emery Rec Center at 10:30am, marching down Georgia Av with a mid-point rally at Bruce Monroe Park and a closing celebration at the African American Civil War Memorial. Performers include student Elena of Elena y Los Fulanos, poet Zein El-Amine, and an Ethiopian dance duo. There will also be discounts at local businesses for marchers and tables at the end celebration with more ways to get involved in inclusive community organizations.”

From a press release:

“On March 11th local community members will come together for a march and rally along the Georgia Avenue corridor to stand up for and celebrate diversity. The goal of the Love March is to stand in solidarity with DC’s diverse communities and send the message “whoever you are, wherever you’re from, we stand together as neighbors.” (more…)

poodle

“Dear PoPville,

We found this lovely poodle this morning near Sherman Circle in Petworth. She’s wearing a green collar with no tags. Very friendly and sweet. I am dropping her off at the Humane Society on New York Avenue where I hope her owners will find her. Please share to help her get home as she is obviously well loved.”

quincy

“On Friday 2/24 around 6:15 pm a couple of blocks on Quincy St NW were blocked off between 9th and 10th St for what looked like an intense crime scene investigation. I was running up 10th and spoke briefly to an officer to make sure I could get into my apartment building, and he said that they were doing an investigation and that he bet I’d “see it on the news later.” An hour or so later I walked my dog down the street and the crime scene area had been reduced to a part of Quincy, an alley, and one home nearby. The officers were taking pictures of the street, and I noticed blood spatter in the cross walk at Quincy and 10th. Despite what the officer said, I haven’t seen anything anywhere in the news about what happened. Does anyone know? Hopefully the victim is ok.”

A reader also reported via email:

“I was walking the dog down Quincy and MPD were with a male with blood all down his arm next to a bike on the ground. I asked the Fire/EMS guy if he just had a bad crash and he told me he was stabbed. There was a trail of blood from down 10th so not sure where it actually happened but Quincy between 9th and 10th is closed down by MPD where he was sitting before the ambulance came. Just when I felt like nothing had happened in Petworth lately! I should add the guy got himself up and walked into the ambulance so I am hopeful he will be okay.

From an email:

“The League of Extraordinary Film Geeks + The Betamax Video Club will be hosting an 80’s Movies Night at Ten Tigers Parlour (old Chez Billy at 3813 Georgia Avenue, NW) on Sunday, February 26. The upstairs lounge will open at 6 PM and the event will begin promptly at 7PM.

A celebration of 80’s B movie classics and home video club culture. This month we delve into classic space opera with a healthy dose of double-entendre and slap stick comedy. Arrive early to enjoy a cocktail and the retro synthwave soundtrack in the upstairs lounge. Then sit back as a pair of space pirates battle the Templars of Mithra to restore the galaxy’s water supply.”
