“Our apartment building, Cathedral Mansion across from the Zoo, caught fire tonight. I woke up to fire alarms and smoke at 10:25pm. We had a bit of smoke in our apartment, but that has dissipated now at 11:08pm. Pretty scary. Looked like it was contained to the end of the second floor. No idea what happened, but the DC fire department was thankfully on the job!”
Update Conn. Ave NW. Fire 2nd floor knocked down. Checking for extension. Very large occupied Bldg. Sheltering some occupants in place. pic.twitter.com/Uso25sxHsV

“Dear PoPville,
There have been, just in my small universe, three incidents in the last four days of individuals using “go back home”, “this is my country”, “where are you from” “get out muzzie C^&*” interactions in the last four days. All three of the incidents were in Petworth/Park View. Two of them may be related. We, some of us lawyers, have checked DC ACLU, and SPLC, and there’s not a specific reporting mechanism on issues like this within DC.
Could you please ask people to fill out this form if they have had any incidents. And if there’s someone who specializes in how to turn these encounters into appropriate identification and tracking of bad actors to pass on ways to do so?”
After two friends within an hour, and three within two days faced confrontations that tread the hate-crime line, we are creating this self-reporting form for individuals to report incidents of intimidation, hate crime, and other danger in the face of political beliefs. The hope is we can establish patterns if needed. All responses will be kept confidential, and contact information if disclosed will only be kept by the database administrator.

From President Lincoln’s Cottage:
“On July 4, 1864, the same day the Lincoln family moved to the Cottage for the last time, Abraham Lincoln signed into law An Act to Encourage Immigration. This legislation cemented Lincoln and the Republican Party’s platform pledging that immigration “should be fostered and encouraged by a liberal and just policy.”
American by Belief, a new special exhibit opening this fall at President Lincoln’s Cottage, introduces the public to Abraham Lincoln’s little known immigration policies. Lincoln believed that America offered immigrants the full realization of its founding promises and a fair chance to succeed. Some of these very principles continue to draw immigrants to the United States 150 years later.
American by Belief opens on October 16, 2015, in the Robert H. Smith Visitor Education Center and will remain open for two years.
Follow here for immigration stories visitors have left us in the exhibit.”

“This Friday (1/27), I am producing a showcase called “Comedy Around the World.” The show has some of DC’s funniest comics performing sets about their different cultural backgrounds that they have performed at popular clubs around the country.
DC is full of diversity– and so is it’s comedy scene! Come hear comedians of different cultural backgrounds tell jokes about growing up in the United States, learning funny life lessons from their immigrant parents, and educating Americans that they can still get sunburnt even though they’re not white. Countries represented include the United States, Japan, India, England, Iran, Ethiopia, and more!

From a press release:
“Anna Bran-Leis and Shawn Leis, the couple behind the forthcoming Taqueria del Barrio will host a pop up next door at Hank’s Cocktail Bar on President’s Day, February 20, 2017. “We really want the neighbors to come and try some of our menu items and luckily we have close friends next door,” says Leis whose best friend Jamie Leeds, owns Hank’s Cocktail Bar next door to the taqueria space. While the construction team readies their 2,200 square foot restaurant, the food and beverage team has been constructing the menu.
The President’s Day Taco Pop Up will feature a limited menu of three cocktails priced at $10 each, five different taco choices at $3 each, tortas, quesadillas and a couple of appetizers at a la carte pricing. Guests can order as much or as little as they like. Anna & the team have been working on the concept’s menu in the commercial kitchen space they use for DC Empanadas, another business owned by the couple.
The taco pop up will take place from 11am until 8pm on Monday, February 20 at 819 Upshur Street, NW, celebrating the true meaning of ‘del barrio’ which translates to ‘of the neighborhood.’

“About Taqueria del Barrio

“We will be open for brunch both Monday January 16 and Friday January 20. We are open every weekday at 11 offering pizza pies and delicious sandwiches on house focaccia, but we’re going to be doing our full brunch menu beginning at 10 on those days this coming week.
We also have some brand new cocktails for the occasion. First up, the Bad Hombre features a delightful marriage of tequila and Cynar to create a spin on your regular ol margarita. Then there is the Nasty Woman, which is much more pleasant than its name suggests; huckleberry-infused gin meets Campari, lemon, and triple sec.
