“John Wall of the Wizard hangs out at Thai Chili.” inside 701 7th Street, NW via Facebook

“Dear PoPville,

My boyfriend and I ate at Thai Chili near Capital One Arena before the Caps game on October 5. We’ve eaten there sporadically before games, so the wait staff knows us. When we were there, one of the servers told us that this was their last year there and that when hockey season ended (the regular season ends in April; hopefully they’ll be playing into June), they would be leaving. Whoa. Hearing from a very reliable source that Iron Horse could be closing October 26th. Iron Horse opened up here back in January 2010.  Updates as we learn more.

UPDATE: Now I hear they are simply selling and will remain open. So hopefully won’t notice too many changes.

UPDATE Oct. 3rd: They ARE closing October 26th!

Washingtonian now reports:

“After a decade of arcade games and motorcycle motifs, Penn Quarter tap room Iron Horse will close on October 26. But the space won’t stay vacant for long. Owners Curt Large and Geoff Dawson of hospitality group Tinshop (Franklin Hall, Tallboy) are teaming up with Ryan Seelbach, co-owner of Shaw bars Takoda and Cortez, to bring endless summer to the space. The Boardwalk, a beach-y bar serving frozen cocktails and corn dogs, will open in early November.”

And here’s the full press release:

“TAKODA Restaurant & Beer Garden and CORTEZ Restaurant & Rooftop Bar owner Ryan Seelbach is pleased to announce the early November, 2019 anticipated opening of The Boardwalk, the 350-person Boardwalk-inspired bar & eatery located at 507 7th Street NW, Washington, DC, 20004. The Boardwalk’s name is derived from the coastal boardwalks of Ocean City, MD, Rehoboth Beach, DE, Brooklyn, NY, and Santa Monica, CA. The Boardwalk will be a welcome addition to the lively Penn Quarter and Chinatown neighborhoods. Guests can anticipate creative takes on popcorn, hot dogs, corn dogs, and cotton candy paired with an extensive draft beer list, cocktails on draft, and frozen drinks. The Boardwalk’s friendly atmosphere will also offer games such as shuffleboard, foosball, and arcade basketball. (more…)

Anna writes about the Capitol Hill Sweetgreen on Penn Ave:

“WHY IS IT STILL CLOSED

Cramping my style. Do you know anything? or perhaps a reader does?”

Ed. Note: I’ve written Sweetgreen for an update but haven’t heard back from them. In possible positive news I did hear that the W Street location has reopened.

624 E Street, NW

As for the Sweetgreen coming to the former Taylor Gourmet in Penn Quarter – it’s still not open yet either.

7th and E Street, NW

Bakers & Baristas opened here back in January 2015. A liquor license placard for Bakers & Barristas posted out front now says:

“A new D Restaurant serving pastries and sandwiches. Seating Capacity of 36 and Total Occupancy Load of 36. The Restaurant will include an Entertainment Endorsement.”

Vivi’s Facebook says:

“Think you know all there is to know about pizza? Be ready for a delicious surprise! (more…)

Natalia reports around 10:15am:

“Knocked out at least two windows. Someone affiliated with the restaurant said a truck was driving on the sidewalk and ran into the restaurant.”

Ed. Note: Earlier this morning there was an incident outside Ford’s theater but that was not a truck. I don’t believe the two are related but updates if that changes.
