1274 5th Street, NE

The liquor license placard for O-Ku says:

“New Restaurant, serving authentic Asian cuisine. Total Occupancy Load is 299 with seating for 175. Summer Garden with 49 seats.”

Anyone know if they’re related to the O-Ku from Charleston, Atlanta and Charlotte? Updates when more is known.

Update from O-Ku’s PR:

“O-Ku is a new Japanese restaurant with an emphasis on sushi that will open near Union Market at 1274 5th St. NE in spring 2018. Owned and operated by The Indigo Road, O-Ku also has locations in Atlanta, Charleston and Charlotte but is far from the typical restaurant chain. Each O-Ku location has different chefs, menus, and décor. Charleston-based architect David Thompson will design the space. The DC location will feature 120 seats downstairs with an upstairs cocktail lounge and rooftop with outdoor seating and its menu will include items cooked over Robata grills and traditional Binchotan charcoal as well as a large selection of sushi and a variety of non-traditional Japanese dishes.

O-Ku DC is projected to open in April 2018.

“Dear PoPville,

What’s going on with the 4th and Florida Ave NE Trader Joes?? You posted that they put up a liquor placard back in March but they’re still not open nor even saying when it might be open.

Maybe someone in the community knows what’s taking so long? People are living in the apartment building on top of the storefront, so the building is “done.” I drive by there almost everyday and it doesn’t look like TJs is opening anytime soon.”

Trader Joe’s posted back in August:

“Washington (Union Market District), D.C. – Opening 2018!

Our Crew is working hard so we can open our doors in 2018. We’ll continue to post new details about the store and its opening here, so please check back for updates.

Date & Time Opening:
TBD in 2018

Store Address:
1240 4th Street NE”

Also please note:

“Trader Joe’s Stores CLOSED on November 23rd for Thanksgiving”

From MPD:

“On October 25, 2017, members of the Narcotics and Special Investigations Division’s Human Trafficking Unit and the First District’s Crime Suppression Team conducted Prostitution Enforcement along the K Street NE corridor. The operation resulted in two (2) arrests for Solicitation of Prostitution. This operation is part of an on-going effort in the NOMA area.”

Ed. Note: Earlier this month we learned that “Councilmember David Grosso (I-At Large) announced the introduction of legislation to improve community health and safety through a new approach that removes criminal penalties for those engaged in consensual sexual exchange.”

300 Massachusetts Ave, NW at 4th St./H St./Mass Ave. NW

The liquor license placard for Carving Room’s 1st and M St, NE (130 M Street, NE) location says:

“New Class “C” Restaurant serving house cured & roasted meats, brunch, hummus, sandwiches, and flat breads, with a seating capacity of 80 inside, a Total Occupancy Load of 100 inside, and a Sidewalk Café with 15 seats outside.”

Bisnow reports they hope to open by April and “The hours and offerings will also be similar to the first location.”

You can see what folks said about their Mount Vernon Squangle location here, which opened up in February 2013. And check out their menus here.

First the F Street pop up and now the Union Station Uniqlo is open!!

Ed. Note: I saw it all set up in full glory after coming off an Amtrak last night but I had two crying kids with me and couldn’t take a picture – it was glorious though. GLORIOUS!

Update:

And blessing to Brent for sending this great dockless find last week: “Left INSIDE Union Station, in front of the forthcoming Uniqlo.”

Ive happily lived in this apartment for over a year and just signed a new lease a few months ago thinking the home buying process would take some time. Capitol Phil reminds us:

“ICYMI (I did): Strip of 12 businesses being renovated on 5th in Florida Mkt to be steakhouse from Le Diplomate guy. Seems really big.”

Back in June we learned that Stephen Starr was bringing St. Anselm, “New Restaurant offering steakhouse cuisine from the grill with 150 seats”, with restaurateur Joe Carroll. They anticipated opening “early next year”. STAY TUNED.

Jennifer sends the photo above yesterday afternoon:

“These were taken from North Cap and N (ish), looking south.”

From the NoMa BID:

“A new mural will soon appear at the top of the AVA NoMaapartment building’s western wall. The artwork, by American artist James Bullough (jamesbullough.com), who lives and works in Berlin and has several murals around the District, will be completed in early October.”

Jonathan posted this morning:

Updates when the mural is finished.

“Dear PoPville,

Sure, it’s always great to have public art, but I feel like it’s kind of a missed opportunity for something vibrant and by a local artist…

Interested to see what the community has to say. The comments on Instagram are generally positive.”

According to Union Market’s Instagram:

“We are so excited to partner with @hirshorn to present the world debut of a new large-scale public-art mural by artist @yokoonoofficial, on the 6th Street wall of Union Market. Created exclusively for Washington, DC, Ono’s new work “RELAX. YOUR HEART IS STRONGER THAN WHAT YOU THINK!” compels us to step outside of our everyday lives and consider the power of the heart over the restrictions of the mind.”
