3401 Water Street, NW. “The Popal Group will replace Malmaison with sausage and beer hall The Berliner this November”

From a press release:

“This November, The Berliner (3401 Water Street NW), a new scratch-made wurst and beer garden opens near the Georgetown waterfront in the space formerly occupied by neighborhood mainstay Malmaison. The Berliner is the latest concept from D.C.-based The Popal Group, the family-run restaurant group behind Cafe Bonaparte, Lapis Bistro (a recent Bib Gourmand honoree), Lapop, and the former Napoleon Bistro.

Inspired by family ties and modern Berlin comfort food, the menu includes Bavarian classics such as bratwurst, schnitzel and homemade pretzels with beer cheese, in addition to modern fare such as doner kebabs and falafel. The Berliner will also feature 24 beers on tap with a variety of domestic, international and seasonal brews ranging from larger producers to to smaller German breweries rarely found on U.S. menus. God damn it.

Thanks, I think, to a reader for sending from “Georgetown. By the time I got my phone out, this little guy had moved off the food. Our area restaurants need to do better. The door to this case was left wide open, so he/she was able to just curry right in.”

Thanks to Eric for the heads up: “FYI fresh baguette on Wisconsin will open on Thursday.”

Fresh Baguette’s Website says:

“Fresh Baguette is THE authentic French bakery in Bethesda

Our bakery is named after its signature product, the traditional baguette. Our master baker leaves nothing to chance and uses the very best French techniques: a cold dough process that develops unique flavors, homemade “levain” (leaven), and an oven imported from France with a stone based sole for outstanding baking. The result is a baguette that is light, airy, with just the right crunch and doesn’t require a trip to France. And we bake baguettes throughout the day, so you can always get a fresh one.

In addition to our traditional baguette, we offer a wide variety of breads all prepared and baked with the same care: (more…)

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Mayor Bowser’s Department of Transportation (DDOT) today announced five new pick-up/drop-off pilot locations following the successful Connecticut Avenue Pick-up/Drop-off Zone Night Life Pilot. Following a 30-day notice and comment period, the Administration will launch the new 24-hour passenger and commercial loading zones in high-demand areas.

“Our goal with the expansion of this pilot is to reduce conflicts between vehicles, pedestrians, and cyclists,” said Mayor Bowser. “By rethinking how we move people and goods between the street and the sidewalk, we can better adapt to a changing transportation landscape and find new ways to work together to meet our Vision Zero goals.”

The new pilot locations will be exclusively used for pick-up/drop-off and commercial loading 24 hours a day. (more…)

Oh my God. The sable, the salmon – DO NOT sleep on the Salmon BLT – perhaps the best seafood sandwich in all Washington D.C. Neopol Savory Smokery is quite possibly the most under-hyped but best seafood in town. They currently have an outpost in Union Market and when I stopped by the new spot on Saturday they looked about ready to open in Georgetown on Grace Street. Grace Street, by the by, has quietly become a phenomenal little street not to be missed, bookmarked by Chaia Tacos and Dog Tag Bakery on one end and Sundevich and Grace Street Coffee on the other with more good stuff in between. Neopol will fit in on the block quite nicely. (more…)

From a press release:

“Reverie is a New American restaurant now open in Washington, D.C.’s historic Georgetown neighborhood. Executive Chef Johnny Spero will feature an elevated yet accessible menu with global influences, allowing ingredients to shine in minimalist preparations. The 64-seat dining room is outfitted with clean, contemporary décor and features an a la carte menu. Reverie aims to remove the pretense and formality from traditional fine dining and make the entire dining experience more approachable and enjoyable. One of the more unique ways they plan to do this is by offering two “pay-what-you-can” seats that will be available once each night through the restaurant’s reservation page on Tock.

If you haven’t tried the new Indian fast casual option at Bharati, today’d be a good day.

This is the former Dolcezza space that closed back in May.

Holy smokes – this insanity was tweeted by DC Fire and EMS Saturday around 2pm:

“This was the scene this morning at Rock Creek Parkway and P St NW after a vehicle went into the creek. #DCsBravest searched the vehicle and adjacent area and found no victims.”
