“Dear PoPville,

The past few weeks I’ve gotten more and more frustrated with drivers in the left turn lane intersection of M street at 19th westbound. You see, a few months ago DDOT installed a left hand turn signal in addition to the normal light in place for motorists going continuing straight on M st.

The light cycle includes a point in which the left hand turn signal is red, but the other stoplight is green. This should indicate that motorists are unable to turn left, correct?

Apparently, wrong.
Every light cycle, I see cars, trucks, taxis, and all other methods of transport blatantly disregard this signal. I’ve seen tour buses almost run people over, cabs cutting off other cars, and even an MPD cruiser breeze through this intersection with blatant disregard.

Considering this is a heavily trafficked intersection, this lack of enforcement of traffic lights creates a particularly dangerous situation.

I’ve tried to contact DC’s “Traffic Safety and Special Enforcement Branch” with no success and no response. Even a sign saying “No left turn on red” would make somewhat of a difference, I would hope. Do your readers having any suggestions for getting MPD or DDOT to either install traffic cams or have officers issuing tickets?”

“Here’s a couple shots of cops parked in bike lanes near Thomas Circle. You’d think the police in general would obey laws more than most. But these guys especially-they’re all here for a bike race. Ridiculous.”

Conveniently located in McPherson Square – James Birdseye McPherson [Ed. Note: Greatest middle name, not a nickname, to date]:

“(November 14, 1828 – July 22, 1864) was a career United States Army officer who served as a General in the Union Army during the American Civil War. He was killed at the Battle of Atlanta, the second highest ranking Union officer killed during the war.”

Interesting to note that by age 35 he was a Major General, also the age he was killed in battle.

From a press release:

“Long before Frank Underwood (“House of Cards”) and Olivia Pope (“Scandal”) came along, Hollywood film directors had discovered D.C. is a great backdrop for intrigue and drama.

Movie fans have a chance to decide which six films featuring D.C. they want to watch outdoors in the Golden Triangle as the business improvement district kicks off “It’s Golden Outside, Escape the Indoors.”

From now until April 25, fans can choose from 19 films that feature D.C. plots, characters and backdrops. Vote online at www.goldentriangledc.com/movie-vote. Choices include everything from “Night at the Museum” to “Annie.”

The six winners of the “Golden Cinema Series” will be shown at Farragut Square on Fridays, May 16–June 27. All films are free and open to the public. Preshow seating will begin at 7:30 p.m. and the movies will start at sunset. Farragut Square is located at the intersections of Connecticut Avenue and K Street, N.W., and across from Farragut North and Farragut West Metrorail stations.

Guests are encouraged to bring a blanket and to make a night of the “Golden Cinema Movies.” The events will start with a short film courtesy of DC Shorts, pet adoptions conducted by the Washington Animal Rescue League, and “Dinner & Movie” special giveaways courtesy of Golden Triangle restaurants and retailers.”
