From MPD:

“On December 9, 2015, at approximately 11:00 p.m., members from the Third District Crime Suppression Team were actively patrolling in the 2400 block of 11 St. N.W. As a result of the member’s observations and training, they were able to apprehend a violent suspect and recover a handgun. Consequently, the individual was placed under arrest. Due to the diligence and efficiency exhibited by the Third District members, another handgun was taken off of the streets of the District of Columbia and the perpetrator was arrested.

mystery

“Dear PoPville,

Sometime between 3:00 – 4:00 am Sunday/Monday this happened to one of the pillars at the entrance to my building in Columbia Heights. It totally looks like a car smashed right into it. Funny thing, no tire marks anywhere. Anyway, cops and management company are looking into. Building and everyone who lives there are fine.

Mgmt Co stepped up really quick and got this temp structure erected to keep loose debris, etc. from affecting foot traffic in/around the building. As soon as I saw it, I knew I had to reach out to the community regarding getting some work on this blank canvas. So, here’s the call for some street art / mural on a temporary structure.

Catch #1 – Unfortunately the Board will not be able to approve any funds for this project. While I personally may be able to help buy paint, this would be mostly a pro bono piece of work. The site is right on a prominent corner on 14th St in lower Columbia Heights – so the work would get great visibility – if that helps.

Catch #2 – this will definitely get tagged. I was hoping a nice piece of art might stand a better chance, but after seeing other work defaced in the neighborhood, I’m not so sure. Just a head’s up.

Finally – you’d have 90% creative control. Would just need to have a chat about your ideas. You could do a full wrap or just one wall. All styles accepted. Go crazy or do something more winter-y or Christmas-y. (Heck, I was thinking of just painting the whole box like a giant Christmas present, complete with a real giant red bow. Ha!)”

“Hundreds of Planned Parenthood supporters and staff gathered on Saturday for a Day of Solidarity. Following a moment of silence, Dawn Laguens, executive vice president of Planned Parenthood Federation of America spoke to a crowded room at All Souls Church in Columbia Heights, “It’s not enough to denounce the tragedy without also denouncing the poisonous rhetoric that fueled it. Instead, some politicians are continuing to stoke it, which is unconscionable — going so far as to try and pass legislation further blocking access to health care just days after the tragedy in Colorado Springs.”

“I awoke about 7:50 am to the sounds of yelling outside on the street. I look out the window and see this across the street in the 1400 block of Meridian Place NW in Columbia Heights. No people seem to be hurt.”

From a press release:

“Planned Parenthood supporters, community members and partner organizations will come together in Washington, DC, on Saturday (December 5th) for a National Day of Solidarity to remember the victims of the tragedy in Colorado Springs, to show support for access to safe reproductive health care free from violence, threats and intimidation, and to stand up against violent rhetoric inciting violence in our communities.

The event comes after a tragic shooting last week at a Planned Parenthood health center in Colorado Springs, CO, and a push by Congress, days after unspeakable violence, to double down on their attacks against reproductive health care — fast-tracking a bill that would block patients from services at Planned Parenthood health centers.

Participants and speakers remember the victims in Colorado and San Bernardino, CA, share personal stories and reflections, and unify against the hateful rhetoric that has incited violence against not only Planned Parenthood, but also the black community, immigrants, refugees, and the transgender community.

This event in Washington, DC, is part of a larger National Day of Solidarity, which will also see events in Denver, CO, and across the country. Below are logistics for the DC event for planning purposes:

WHO:       Planned Parenthood supporters, ally organizations, community leaders

WHAT:     National Day of Solidarity

WHEN:     Saturday, December 5, at 10am ET.  Doors open at 9:30 a.m. EST.

WHERE:   All Souls Church Unitarian, 1500 Harvard St. NW”

apathy

A reader shares this incredibly upsetting incident:

“I didn’t think much of the charcoal gray SUV that pulled over when I was walking up 16th St. until I heard the screams of the woman trying to get out of the passenger door. I ran towards the woman who screamed at me, “my husband beats me every day! Call 911!” And as I got closer I could see why she was screaming and trying to get out of the car. The driver was pummeling her and an infant in the backseat was wailing. I try to grab her arm but her husband is too fast and yanks her in the car and locks the door. But shutting the door does little to muffle the screams coming from the woman and the baby in the backseat. And I can see the man and his fists and arms flying.

So I do the only thing I can do and the very least I think common human decency requires. I step in front of the SUV and photograph the license plate and stand in front of the car so the abuser can’t drive away while I dial 911. But because my phone is a computer and not a phone I can’t get through but I’m not too worried about it because I know someone else is seeing this and surely they are calling 911. So I ditch the call and start beating the windshield with my umbrella to try and get the guy to lay off. He tires of that quickly and is ready to flee but I’m still planted in front of him so he does exactly what you’d expect. He starts driving into me and tries to pry me out of his path by threatening to run me over. But here’s the thing asshole: you are going to have to run me over if you think I’m letting you get away before the police get here. Because I am my sister’s keeper. (more…)
