In Happier Kennedy Street News – Major Revitalization Project Kicks Off Plus ANXO Progress

“Mayor Muriel Bowser joined Ward 4 Councilmember Brandon Todd, District Department of Transportation Director (DDOT) Leif Dormsjo and DC Water Clean Rivers Project Director Carlton Ray to kick off a multimillion dollar revitalization project in a historic section of Kennedy Street, NW. The revitalization is a collaborative project that will improve traffic and pedestrian safety and increase green infrastructure. The project will span Kennedy Street from Georgia Avenue to North Capitol Street in the Ward 4 neighborhoods of Brightwood and South Manor Park.

“When this project is complete, residents and businesses along the Kennedy Street corridor in Ward 4 will have all new infrastructure,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “This is a project that I have cared about for a long time, and my Administration pledged to get the work done. The revitalization of Kennedy Street represents another significant investment in our neighborhoods.”

“a bullet had broken an apartment window in the block” at 9th and Kennedy St, NW early Sunday Morning

From MPD on Sunday:

“Shortly after 2 AM this morning, MPD received multiple calls for the sounds of gunshots in the vicinity of 8th & Kennedy Streets, NW. Additionally, MPD’s Shotspotter detected the sounds of gunshots at multiple locations. Fourth District units were in the area and also heard the gunshots. The area was canvassed but no victims were located. However, we received an additional call from the 5500 block of 9th Street, NW, stating that a bullet had broken an apartment window in the block. A unit responded and recovered the bullet from the apartment.

Anyone with information regarding these sounds of gunshots is urged to call 202-727-9099 or text 50411.”

Ed. Note: earlier we reported four houses had been hit by gunfire on the 800 block of Crittenden St, NW that same night.

“I found a man’s watch and wedding band in a Car2Go on the morning of October 7th at the 800 block of Marietta Place NW. The folks at Car2Go have not been helpful in getting these items back their owner, despite having the information about who used the car before I did. Double Shooting on Kennedy Street, 36 Year Old Killed

“Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the 600 block of Kennedy Street, Northwest on Saturday, October 15, 2016.

At approximately 2:13 am, members of the Fourth District responded to a call for shots fired. Upon arrival, members located two adult males suffering from gunshot wounds. DC Fire and EMS responded to the scene and determined one of the victims had no signs consistant with life and his body remained on scene. The second victim sustained life-threatening injuries and was transported to an area hospital where he’s listed in critical condition.

The decedent has been identified as 36-year-old Saul Flores-Canales, of Northeast, DC.

The Metropolitan Police Department currently offers a reward of up to $25,000 to anyone that provides information which leads to the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible for any homicide committed in the District of Columbia. Anyone with information about this case is asked to call the police at 202-727-9099. Additionally, anonymous information may be submitted to the department’s TEXT TIP LINE by text messaging 50411.”

“Around 7:15 PM, MPD responded to a shooting in the parking lot of the 5700 block of Georgia Avenue NW. The victim was located suffering from gun shot wounds and taken to a local hospital for emergency medical treatment. The victim is in serious condition.

“The victim did not survive his injuries. Homicide detectives are investigating this case.

Update on the dog, Cora, hit by a stray bullet in Brightwood Park at 6:30pm Monday:

“Though I may wish there were canine HIPAA laws protecting my privacy, I’m very grateful for all the well-wishes from the PoPville. I’m home, resting, and going to make a full recovery. They don’t call me #hardcora for nothing.

I’d also love to give a shout out to our incredible, capable, leg-saving dog sitter. She was the definition of cool under pressure.”

Dog Hit by Stray Bullet in 6:30pm Shooting at 7th and Jefferson St, NW Last Night

“Dear PoPville,

There was a shooting in Brightwood around 6:30pm today [Monday] on 7th and Jefferson. I was about 20 feet away walking the dogs I’m dog sitting for. I am fine but unfortunately one of the dogs was hit in the leg. She is being a champ though and is currently being treated at the vet. It’s a shame because there has been a police presence on this particular corner every night. I guess that means shootings are happening during the day when more folks/bystanders are around? Just please be safe everyone.”

Update this morning:

“She’s staying at the vet for now but fortunately shouldn’t need surgery. And props to all the neighbors who came outside when I got back asking how she was doing!”

About all that Commotion at 5th and Gallatin at Midnight

“At about midnight a car was heading north on 5th Street NW, evidently with four flat tires. When spotted by a cop in the corner of 5th and Hamilton, the car flipped a u-turn and attempted to speed away with cops in pursuit. A block away, he crashed into the pole on the corner and got out to run. He was apprehended shortly thereafter on foot. Cops were looking under nearby cars for something he might has tried to drop while running.”

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The Kennedy Street Development Association will host their third annual Kennedy Street festival, Saturday Jun. 25 from 11a.m. to 3p.m.

Councilmember Brandon Todd will attend the festival and have a table for constituents to visit. The festival will also feature specials at local businesses along the street, local DC artists and artisans vending their creations, booths from local non-profits and DC agencies, local musical talent and entertainment, food trucks, and community activities to learn about Kennedy Street’s history.”
