Good grief. Was this in the rite aid parking lot? This has been an awful few days for this stretch of Georgia.

Seems like its been an awful week or two. Are we up to 10 shootings in the Petworth-Brightwood corridor? It seems like it’s been every day or two recently.

  • Anon

    Was this at the Rite-Aid?

    • ZetteZelle

No, Rite-Aid is in the 5600 block. Although PoP put the Google Maps pin on the west side of Georgia, it could be on the east side–the rec center parking lot. (If it’s on the west side, looks like it’s at Express Car Wash.

(Such a shame, because the Emery playground really is awesome.)

  • Guillermo Brown

It’s basically a shooting every other day in that neck of the woods. What a shame

  • Anon

Driving by just before 9:30 and there was a big police presence at Emery rec center.

  • Timetogo

This is the third incident involving guns around that rec center that I’m aware of in the past 5 years. When I moved up there and expressed a concern about crime at one point, I was told by a commenter on here that I was being ridiculous because the police station was right there. How is a police station not even a deterrent anymore!?

    • Anon

….and the second homicide there in 15 months.

      • SW 20011

The police station on M St SW has never been a deterrent to shootings in the ‘hood.

        • 2 Sense

My kids went to that rec’s summer camp last year and this is the last week it is in session and ends at 6:00 p.m. They have a pre-school age camp and another for older kids.

You should get 15 years in jail minimum if you are caught with an illegal firearm in the District, I am just going to keep saying it.

15 for a 9(mm). Until I see a better plan to stop people from shooting each other, this needs to happen.

Go to the source: neighboring states that have loose gun laws and reckless gun owners who pawn, illegally sell or don’t lock up their weapons.

    • stacksp

There used to be a mandatory 5 for possession back in the 90s. I know a few fellas that actually did about 18 months of the 5 before being released.

Conflicted a bit, because I do know upstanding citizens that own solely for protection in their homes and I would hate for them to get 15 years albeit they are technically breaking the law. A more fair licensing practice would effectively differentiate the different types of gun owners imo.

      • Florence Water Tower

This is all exactly my point. 18 months of the 5 years is not a deterrent, I know people working in the criminal justice system that deal with offenders and they always say to them “a year ain’t sh!t”. I am guessing 15 would be.

We can’t make laws in other jurisdictions, but we can here. I don’t care about other states because I don’t live there.

Make gun licensing fair, and severely punish those who don’t follow the law. This isn’t like drug abuse where you are only harming yourself and generally, the offender needs help. If you are carrying a gun on the street, it is only a matter of time before you use it, and it can have the ultimate consequence for innocent bystanders. Our council members need to grow a spine and get tough on violent criminals.

      • Concerned Citizen

Why don’t those “upstanding citizens” you reference just get a legal gun? District residents are allowed to own a firearm since the District v. Heller case, is my understanding.

        • stacksp

I believe they are in the mix with all those others seeking licenses. Just havent been granted yet.

        • stacksp

One of my good friends sister who lives EOTR in SE was actually granted a license. We arent exactly sure how/why her app was granted but everyone has modeled their application after hers so to speak outside of the personal info. Still nothing.

She put in the fact that she is a new mom in an urban community etc….

  • Concerned Citizen

One of the big problems is that in this city only people suspected of having committed violent crimes can be held for any length of time before a trial. Being in possession of an illegal firearm is not considered a violent crime. So when someone is caught in possession of an illegal firearm, they are usually back on the street within 24-48 hours. That’s simply not enough time. We need to treat possession of an illegal firearm as a violent crime and get people who commit this very serious crime off our streets.

    • smh

true. someone with the same name as the guy arrested for the murder at 6th & N NW last week had charges dropped for unregistered firearm less than a year ago, plus pending charges for PCP possession and assaulting a police officer (both of which he failed to show up for and only appeared once warrants were issued).

What exactly do you need to do to get properly supervised around here? How is possessing a gun and large amounts of hallucinogens, plus assaulting a cop and failing to show up to court twice when you said you would–all within the span of a few months–not enough?

      • Concerned Citizen

This city has a policy of not using a bail system. Everyone except for violent offenders are released without bail until the time of his/her trial. In general, that’s fine – poor people shouldn’t suffer disproportionately because they can’t afford to post bail – but we need to redefine “violent crime” to include possession of an illegal firearm, at a minimum.

I suspect that there is some type of feud or conflict going on in the area, there has been an increase in the number of shootings in the Brightwood Park/North Petworth area recently, especially along the GA ave corridor but also to the east in some of the neighborhoods.

  • Brightwoodian

I drive by this intersection every day on the way home. For a while the shootings seemed to be at least after dark. I’m changing my route now. Its only a matter of time before some poor goof like me is commuting home late from the office and gets hit by a stray bullet.
