“Hey PoP,

Don’t know if you saw this article in WTOP. I was furious to read that Walter Reed construction won’t start for another 5-7 years!”

“Construction is expected to begin within 5 to 7 years after closing,” D.C. Council Committee of the Whole Legislative Counsel Cynthia LeFevre tells WTOP in an email.

LeFevre expects “substantial completion” of the entire redevelopment project within 23 years.

From Council Member Brandon Todd:

“Let’s discuss, for a moment, the re-development of the former Water Reed Medical Campus. I understand there has been some confusion as to the specifics of the overhaul, and, today, I aim to clear up some of your questions and misconceptions. On Tuesday, February 16th, the Council unanimously voted in favor of bill 21-474, the “Walter Reed Development Omnibus Act of 2015.” The approval of this much-anticipated legislation paves the way for the revitalization of the Walter Reed site. Following a second Council vote and the Mayor’s signature, developers will be able to break ground on the site. (more…)

A resident inquires on an MPD listserv:

“Several neighbors heard multiple gunshots in the 700 block of Somerset Pl. NW shortly after 9 pm tonight. Cruisers were on the scene shortly after that occurred.
Is any information available on this?”

At this time, we do not believe anyone was injured. The investigation is ongoing.”

“A firearm was recovered in reference to this offense. Shotspotter did not detect the gunshots.”

Two firearms were recovered. Investigation is on going with this incident.”

Ed. Note: A note of caution to those who overly rely on Shotspotter to prove or disprove accounts of shots fired/shootings.

The victim reported that he was walking in the 1200 block of Rittenhouse Street, NW, when an unknown African American male wearing dark clothing exited a black SUV and pointed a dark handgun at him for no apparent reason.

“Dear PoPville,

The first meaningful dust is flying at Walter Reed. The building at Butternut and Georgia (across Georgia from the main campus) is nearly demolished. This will be a new fire station.

Just up the street (Georgia and Elder-Fern), several vacant properties have been razed. Not sure what’s going in there. I don’t think this is part of the Walter Reed plan. My guess is condos. There have been several low- and mid-rise new construction and renovations in that immediate area.”

“So, there is someone in my street that is in law enforcement that decided to ignore chief Lanier’s instructions regarding saving street parking spots after clearing the snow off the vehicles, and not only did he use chairs to save his spot, but also he used OFFICIAL “Police Line Do Not Cross” tape to do so!

Do as I say, not as I do?….”

A reader reports Monday just after 4pm:

“a few neighbors saw it and less than 10 minutes later, a firetruck and two SUVs showed up. Thankfully, we think the house isn’t occupied right now. This house is on Sheridan right before 7th.”

“I noticed this new restaurant on Geogia and Rittenhouse. Looks like they just opened. Nice to see new restaurants coming to that area. If you have any info on it, that would be great!

Looks like they opened up December 11th:

“Desta Ethiopian Restaurant will be open Tomorrow for lunch..everyone is welcome….!”

Their facebook page also says:

“Desta Ethiopia Restaurant welcomes you to taste our exotic flavors of Ethiopian Lounge. The exotic flavors are the veg combo and special,Tibs, kornis, kitfo.”

Anyone stop in for a taste?

A reader reports:

“Around 10:30pm last night, my wife and I woke to the sound of an explosion. We looked out our bedroom window, onto the alley behind our house, and saw a car on fire (Audi SUV). We, along with many of our neighbors, called 911. The fire dept. quickly showed up and extinguished the fire.

We live on a quiet street in Brightwood. As far as I know, no one claimed the car — some suspected it was a stolen vehicle and intentionally destroyed.”
