A reader sends from around 7th and Peabody Street, NW.

The Washington Post did a big article over the summer on the 78 year old, Milfred Ellis, who posted these signs:

“The 78-year-old retired analyst for the Bureau of Labor Statistics views his Brightwood community as a waning example of a strong middle-class black neighborhood. He wants to draw attention to the plight of black residents in the District, even if it means chiding white residents who already have moved in.”

From MPD on Sunday:

“Around 10:30 a.m. a citizen transported a hand grenade they had in their possession to the 4th District Police station for disposal. The follow roads are closed pending it’s safe recovery:

5900-6000 blocks of Georgia Avenue NW
900-1000 blocks of Peabody Street NW

The businesses and residences have been evacuated as well to include:

WalMart
McDonalds
4D Police Station”

From the Mayor’s Office:

“Brightwood neighbors – today, a resident arrived at 4D Police Station on Georgia Avenue NW to turn in a grenade they found. As a precaution, Georgia Avenue was closed. MPD has been in touch with federal partners who will take possession of the device. Please stay clear of the area this afternoon and follow instructions of public safety officials if you are in the area. At this time, no injuries are reported. We will post an update as more information is available.

Mayor Bowser”

MPD later wrote:

“At this time the suspicious package in the 900 block of Peabody Street, NW has been declared safe and all closures have been reopened.”

and

“According to the reporting person, her deceased husband had been in possession of the hand grenade for many years. It had been given to him by his grandfather.”

Remember when those old grenades were found during a Columbia Heights row house renovation?

“Dear PoPville,

Once again I was hit by yet another package thief (a pair of them in this case).
I work from home so I don’t usually have an issue when couriers leave the packages out on my porch, the problem is that the drivers for UPS and ‘LaserShip’ just plain refuse to ring the bell once they deliver a package, so, many times packages just sit there for a bit until I notice them. I actually walked out to pick up the packages (on this video) not even 2 minutes after the thieves stole some of them.

Funny thing is that the packages they stole only contained acne cream and other ‘beauty products’… judging by the video, they’re teens, so the acne cream might suit them well.

Sometimes I think I should take matters into my own hands and set them up and confront them… any thoughts on this PoPville?”

The suspect is under arrest and will be charged with assault and firearms charges.”

A resident inquires on an MPD listserv:

“Is there any information on the 8-10 gunshots(?) heard on 5th St around Sheridan at 11:35 this morning? I called 911 and police came out to the are very quickly. I’m wondering if they found any evidence of bullets or any suspects.”

MPD replies:

“Officers are on the scene canvassing, no reported injuries at this time. Coolidge HS has been placed on lock down for safety reasons.”

From MPD:

“On August 19, 2015, at approximately 10:23 PM, Fourth District units received a 911 call for a shooting in the 1300 block of Missouri Avenue, NW. Upon arriving on the scene, 4D officers found an adult male suffering from a gunshot wound to his lower back. The victim reported that he was walking in the area of the 5900 block of 13th Place, NW, when a red sedan with unknown Pennsylvania license plates pulled up near him. Suspects inside of the vehicle began shooting at the victim, and the victim ran towards Missouri Avenue. While running, the victim was shot once in the lower back. The red sedan was last seen fleeing southbound on 13th Place. The victim was transported to a local area for treatment.

Anyone with information regarding this offense is asked to call the Metropolitan Police Department’s Command Information Center at 202-727-9099. Thank you.”

“Dear PoPville,

My fiance and I live (with our dog, Logan) at 5th and Longfellow St NW. Last night, there were two rounds of shots fired. One shot at 10pm. The next set of 5-10 shots fired at around 1045p.

We heard something hit the back of our house (which happens to be our master bathroom which is attached to our bedroom). We were in the bedroom.

We called the police (as did many of our neighbors) who came out to look at the house and search for suspects. Supposedly, they caught a guy the next block up.

With closer inspection this morning, we saw that a rogue bullet that hit the space in between our two upper level back windows.

Any idea what to do now? Should we call the police to retrieve the bullet? Home owners insurance for repair the siding?”

Ed. Note: The police have been called and notified about the bullet/damage.
