From an email:

“I wanted to let you know that there has been a very unexpected turn of events last minute yesterday. I will be allowed to stay in the space here until the end of March to allow for a smoother transition and give me more time to find a new location.”

From an email:

“Sweet Science Coffee is closing its storefront in Adams Morgan

Almost a year after starting to brew craft coffee by hand, Sweet Science Coffee is closing down this Saturday, Febuary 6th.

“We had the hope to make our tiny space a permanent spot, it didn’t work out”, says owner Sandra Wolter. Since the shop has earned a loyal following and great reviews by coffee enthusiats, she is looking for a new location and will continue her coffee classes, events and travel in the meantime.

To say thank you, Sandra and her team will be having a pop-down event this
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 6th.

All drinks will be sold on a “pay as you wish” basis as long as supplies last.

Please check their website for updates and bookings in the coming weeks.”

Around Midnight Millie & Al’s tweeted out:

“ATTN: despite what you may have read/heard, Millie and Al’s will not, I repeat, WILL NOT be closing it’s doors.”

To be clear the original article from the Washington Business Journal said the building is for sale and they will be “likely to close“. They didn’t say they were closed or they were closing on a particular date. Just reporting that their building was for sale and “from the broker: The building will be “delivered vacant.” So obvious conclusions were drawn. I’ll also add that this was the same reaction I received when I first wrote about the Stetson’s building being for sale. As we know Stetson’s sold and is now closed. WBJ reached out to Millie and Al’s for comment (as did I) and did not hear back.

On Millie and Al’s Facebook page they wrote:

“Business as usual. We are not closed.
Who started that rumor?

Karaoke Thursday, starts at 9:30pm.”

Raman Santra answered their question: “Your real estate broker”

Anyway the good news is – you can still go to Karaoke and have jello shots. Until you can’t. As was reported. Stay tuned.

Thanks to all who sent emails about the Washington Business Journal report yesterday:

“The home of Millie & Al’s, 2440 18th St. NW, is for sale, according to a postcard we received Tuesday from Josh Feldman of Marcus & Millichap. The list price is $1.8 million for the 2,562-square-foot building on a 2,719-square-foot lot.

Most importantly, from the broker: The building will be “delivered vacant.”

I’ve emailed the owner for official word and am still waiting to hear back from her. In April 2013 to celebrate their 50th Anniversary the owner wrote A Brief History about Original Owner Al Shapiro – definitely worth a read if you missed it. Updates as soon as more info is known.

Ed. Note: Lots of nominees are starting to roll in so starting tomorrow I’ll post multiple nominees.

A reader nominates:

“1841 Columbia Rd. NW is a large apartment building with some well-traveled sidewalks, but only the good tenants at Lapis had the decency to shovel their area as of 1pm Monday. They should be ashamed, both residents and neighbors get to navigate fully un-shoveled slippery ice paths!”

Ed. Note: Yesterday we noted Songbyrd’s dope new paint job

From a press release:

“Chef Quinten Frye brings his take on classic Mexican Tortas, small bites and desserts to Songbyrd Café located at 2477 18th Street NW in DC’s Adams Morgan neighborhood on Monday, February 1 from 5-10 p.m.

Frye is a James Beard award semi-finalist, who, prior to his stint as executive chef at Big Bear Café, opened an award-winning venture in Hawaii called Cocina Modern Mexican. Cocina exemplified Frye’s ability to cook authentic regional cuisine in a new locale, gaining him greater recognition not only in Hawaii, but also in culinary magazines across the country. He brings this expertise to Songbyrd with this pop-up. (more…)
