There was a lot of speculation after Wegmans “looked doubtful” and when we last spoke about the massive Walter Reed development a few weeks ago. Well here we have it according to the new DC Neighborhood Profiles report from the Washington DC Economic Partnership (WDCEP):

Update: Thanks to all who sent this link from WBJ:

“The District-based Douglas has filed plans with the D.C. Zoning Commission to construct a mixed-use building on a 2-acre site bounded by Eastern Avenue, Georgia Avenue, Alaska Avenue and Kalmia Road NW in Shepherd Park. The project will include 199 multifamily units over 56,079 square feet of retail, anchored by a new Harris Teeter supermarket, and 271 underground parking spaces.”

Coming to McMillan too – but we knew that.

Also of note – DC’s daytime population is 1,145,482 – I’ve always wondered that!

Anyway, you can read the full report here.

“Dear PoPville,

Just wanted to share that rodents have made their way into the “new” Safeway in Petworth. Really unfortunate. I’ve reported it to the city but wanted to share with PoPville.

I was grocery shopping and saw one run right in front of me across the cereal aisle. It ran from one bottom shelf to the other. I was so shocked and disgusted that I just left my half-full grocery cart right there and walked out. I tried to tell customer service on my way out, but there was no one there. Also, I figured it was better to report to the city, as I’m sure Safeway must already be aware.

I moved to Petworth about a week or two before the Safeway opened. I had never been to the “Smelly Safeway” but from what I hear, it was pretty bad! I hope that our new Safeway doesn’t go down the same path.”

Ed. Note: The old store was known as the Stinky Safeway.

Update
from a resident of the Floridian building next door:

“Residents –

I’ve received an email from JBG notifying that they have issued a “Notice to Proceed” to their Contractor(s). 945 Florida Avenue, which abuts the Floridian is now officially under construction.

As for 965 Florida Avenue (Whole Foods, etc.) – MRP Realty is looking to tentatively break ground sometime in the fourth quarter of 2017.”

“Dear PoPville,

Walked by the other day and noticed they finally broke ground at 965 Florida Ave. Thought readers would be interested in this. Still hoping for a Wegmans over Whole Foods but I think that’s a done deal.”

Ed. Note: Whole Foods is a done deal.

Updates as construction progresses. This is across the street from the recently closed Darnell’s and very close to Duffy’s as well as 9:30 Club.

Gargantuan Grocery Store Week concludes with another crowd favorite – Trader Joe’s!! (We’ve hit the grocery store trifecta this week – Whole Foods, Wegmans and Trader Joe’s, whoever had that ticket can pick up their winnings at Solly’s at 3pm today.) This is the Trader Joe’s we first learned about back in November. The liquor license placard lists hours as 8 am – 10 pm – STAY TUNED!

As H Street was getting closer to opening, every time I posted I’d get emails asking about Navy Yard’s status. Unfortunately PR was unable to give an opening date so I stopped by last weekend to take a peek. Still a few months to go for sure:

“Early 2017” may have been a bit ambitious when they announced in 2013 but a ton of progress has been made in the last year:

Stay tuned.

Washington Business Journal with the massive potential news:

“Roadside Development is in talks with the popular grocer [Wegmans] to anchor its planned redevelopment of Fannie Mae’s longtime home once it relocates for a new headquarters at Carr Properties’ Midtown Center, according to sources familiar with the situation.”

WBJ also quotes Roadside Development Principal Richard Lake as saying: “We would be very pleased if they became one of our tenants, but I cannot confirm that we have a deal because we just don’t. We’re in conversations with a number of folks.”

Ed. Note: So you’re saying I’ve got a chance?!?!? Good enough for me. Dear God please make this happen.

Never a dull moment on the grocery store beat in Glover Park!! The potential Trader Joe’s at the former Holiday Inn as been confirmed(ish) – from the Glover Park listserv:

“I just heard that the deal is confirmed for Trader Joe’s to locate in the new development at the site of the old Holiday Inn. I’m not sure exactly about the timing but it’s likely sometime in late 2018 or early 2019, given that the ground isn’t even broken yet.”

As for the Whole Foods closure, Whole Foods announced on the listserv:

“We announced today that we will be remodeling the Georgetown store to offer our customers a fresh, new shopping experience. Our goal is to exceed our customers’ expectations on every shopping trip, and making these investments in the store will help us to do that. We apologize for the inconvenience and welcome our customers to continue to shop with us at our nearby stores, including our brand new H Street location.”

“what is happening at Glover park whole foods!? Are we getting a beer mecca like H st??”

About a month ago the Glover Park Whole Foods briefly closed after being cited for food safety violations by the Department of Health. Other readers have reported the store has been closed since Monday. And as of this morning, Jamie updates us “still closed”

I’ve emailed Whole Foods for an update. Stay tuned.
