“Hoffman-Madison Waterfront (HMW), the developer of The Wharf, a $2 billion, mile-long neighborhood located on DC’s Southwest waterfront, today announced the architects and designers selected to design Phase 2 of the site.
The eleven architects comprise one of the most impressive lineups in the nation to design the ambitious second phase of The Wharf. When complete, Phase 2 of The Wharf will feature an additional 1.2 million square feet of mixed-use development including office, residential, marina, and retail space, as well as parks and public spaces, across an approximate half mile of waterfront.
Phase 1 is scheduled to open in October 2017. The groundbreaking for Phase 2 will take place in mid-2018, with an expected completion date in 2021.
“It is extraordinarily exciting to be able to announce the team we have selected to design Phase 2 of The Wharf,” said Shawn Seaman, AIA, Principal and Senior Vice President of Development of PN Hoffman. “We have selected a diverse group of locally, nationally, and internationally renowned designers, knowing they will bring their talent and expertise to The Wharf, building a waterfront neighborhood that is an integral part of the city.”

Friedman and Dantes Partners to lead the redevelopment of the historic Franklin School, located at the intersection of 13th Street NW and K Street NW in Ward 2. Delivering on the Bowser Administration’s commitment to the creative economy, the proposed development will transform the historic space into Planet Word, an interactive language arts museum and education space.
“Planet Word is a one-of-a-kind project that delivers on our promise to invest in the arts in the most innovative of ways,” said Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development Brian T. Kenner. “Developing the Franklin School into an interactive language center gives visitors and residents a unique learning experience, adds to the cultural fabric of our downtown, and is a great fit for the District’s growing creative economy.”
Planet Word’s mission is to inspire a love of words and language and increase literacy through a host of interactive exhibits and experiences. Along with the Mundolingua in Paris, Planet Word will be one of just a few fully-operational language museums globally. Initially inspired by MoMath, the National Museum of Mathematics in Manhattan, Ms. Friedman, with the support of her husband, Thomas L. Friedman, and a national board, has been developing plans for the museum for more than three years and is delighted to have found such an appropriate venue for the project and have the opportunity to restore the Franklin School to its former architectural glory. “Federal Capital Partners® (FCP) has entered into a joint venture with Level 2 Development, LLC and Clark Enterprises, Inc. to develop The Highline, a $100 million apartment community at 320 Florida Avenue, NE in Washington, DC. The community will be comprised of 318 luxury apartment homes including four penthouse units and approximately 10,000 square feet of first floor retail space.

“Here’s the story so far:
At the end of November, DC’s Historic Planning Office (HPO) issued its recommendation to the Preservation Review Board (HPRB) to decline Marx Realty’s plan to convert the landmarked service station into a MUD. The extant structure would have been relocated on the site and become some form of retail. (The Fine Arts Commission had previously given its approval.)
December 6, Marx tells the Sunoco to get out.
Yesterday (Tuesday 1/3) it’s emptied out and fence up. I haven’t been over there yet today to see what kind of progress has been made. A neighbor sent a video from this morning showing the canopies over the former pumps being demolished. (more…)

About a month ago we learned that the Fannie Mae HQ building and property had sold to Roadside Development and NORTH AMERICA SEKISUI HOUSE, LLC.
“The acquisition includes a 228,000 square foot building and approximately 10 acres of land.”
The original report called for a shopping mall as well as luxury condos but now Roadside Development has set up a website to engage neighbors:
“In anticipation of Fannie Mae’s departure, our team is excited to work with the community early on in planning the future uses of the site.”
