Posted to a bunch of neighborhood listservs yesterday:

“My name is Jay. I am a local Organic Grower in Washington DC in the Petworth neighborhood. I am interested in meeting more like minded people. So this will be short and sweet.

I am allowed per DC law to gift you up to an Ounce of Bud. Everything is done via a contribution that you make towards my grow. I have a grow set up in my local apartment and I typically invite people in so they can see what they are donating towards. In return for your Contribution/Donation I will gift you an appropriate amount of Buds.

I do not sell Weed, so do not ask or I will have to turn you away. I do not deliver REPEAT DO NOT DELIVER. It is local pick-up only and I am in Petworth. People constantly ask me to deliver to Virginia or Maryland and it is totally illegal. Lets be clear, I do not want to break the law I want to work with it so if you ask me to I can not talk to you any further. Please do not! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I was wondering you could post something in support of Save Bruce Monroe Park. The City is planning on turning it into a 9 story luxury condo building on Georgia Ave, and I think many of our neighbors would be opposed to this if they were aware. People need to call their councilmembers today before the Council votes tomorrow on whether to postpone a final vote.

There is also an email tool that people can use.

More info on the park.

I love the Columbia Heights/ Petworth area, and it would be a real shame to lose this park to more condos.”

Ed. Note: You can see previous Bruce Monroe posts here.

The following release was just issued at 12:25pm on the Columbia Heights Listserv “DC Council Approves Surplus and Disposition of Bruce Monroe Site for Park Morton Redevelopment Effort”:

“Today, the Council of the District of Columbia voted unanimously at their Committee of the Whole meeting to place the Bruce Monroe surplus and disposition resolutions on the consent agenda for approval at today’s final Legislative Meeting of 2016. This action supports the effort for the site to be used as the “Build First” site in the District’s effort to replace the Park Morton Housing Complex with a new mixed-income community without displacing Park Morton families from the community. The Zoning Commission is scheduled to take action on the related Park Morton Planned Unit Development cases on January 30, 2017, following two hearings held earlier this month. (more…)

Well this is pretty cool. From a press release:

“Officials from Hoffman-Madison Waterfront (HMW), developer of The Wharf, the $2 billion, mile-long neighborhood located on DC’s Southwest waterfront, introduced DC’s first office building to be built on a pier. With Pier 4’s delivery in 2017, The Wharf continues to activate Washington, DC’s waterfront in ways that had been previously unimagined. Extending 260 feet into the Potomac River, Pier 4 will offer tenants panoramic views of the Washington Channel and nearly the entire length of a bustling Wharf Street.

“There simply will be no other office building anywhere in the country that will offer the views, amenities, design features and architectural distinction of the Wharf,” said Amer Hammour, Chairman of Madison Marquette. “In many ways, Pier 4 is a landmark of this transformative project, overlooking the Potomac River in the middle of one of the largest urban redevelopment programs in Washington’s history‎.” (more…)

At a “ground breaking” ceremony yesterday the Mayor said: “Today’s groundbreaking is the culmination of nearly 30 years of work to ensure the McMillan redevelopment will best serve the residents of Ward 5”

Alas it may require a bit more than 30 years… WAMU reports:

“In its ruling, the a three-judge panel found that the Zoning Commission did not adequately justify its decision to allow the proposed development at McMillan to exceed zoning limits for the site in the city’s Comprehensive Plan.

But the court’s ruling wasn’t a total win for the Friends of McMillan Park. In the ruling, the court’s judges found that high-density development could be permitted on the site, despite it being zoned for lower levels of density.”

Updates. No, no more updates for a while. I have McMillan fatigue. Updates when something concrete, no pun intended, happens one way or the other. In the meantime:

Ed. Note: You can read about the ongoing “McMillan Park” Lawsuit here.

From a press release:

“Today, Mayor Muriel Bowser, Ward 5 Councilmember Kenyan McDuffie, and Deputy Mayor for Planning and Economic Development (DMPED) Brian Kenner broke ground on the McMillan Sand Filtration Site, a 25-acre development located at North Capitol Street and Michigan Avenue, NW in Ward 5. The transformative project is expected to create 6,200 jobs and 134 units of affordable housing and produce $1.2 billion in economic activity over 30 years. The groundbreaking represents the first activity at the site in nearly three decades.

“Today’s groundbreaking is the culmination of nearly 30 years of work to ensure the McMillan redevelopment will best serve the residents of Ward 5,” said Mayor Muriel Bowser. “When I took office, I committed to moving big projects forward so DC communities can benefit from the District’s growth and development. McMillan is proof of my administration’s unwavering commitment to getting more residents on pathways to the middle class by creating employment opportunities and affordable housing.”

The $720-million redevelopment of McMillan is the product of a successful community-driven process led by Mayor Bowser. Throughout the planning process and the selection of the development team, the District and its partners convened over 200 workshops and community forums, ensuring residents had a voice in shaping the vision of their neighborhood. Vision McMillan Partners (VMP) will redevelop the site, which will feature: 12 acres of public, open and green space; an eight-acre park; a 17,000 square-foot community center with a pool; a full-service grocery store; restaurants and retail; 655 units of housing (134 affordable); and over one million square-feet of healthcare facility space. All 24 historic buildings and two underground cells will be preserved. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Rock Creek Church has been totally razed and is currently a big pit in the ground. I know there going to build something but it looks really sad right now. The brightest point is they saved the end row house on 8th that you spotlighted many moons ago as having been one of of the first row houses in that area. It seems that the new owners also acquired that building when they acquired the church but are keeping it.

They moved very quickly with the raze and cleanup. It was there two weeks ago. Last weekend. Everything is gone. I mean not even one brick. Supposedly the project is headed by ERB.”

Updates as construction progress and more is known. Before demo:
