“Dear PoPville,

I am a busy DC parent who sometimes drives, sometimes bikes to work. I have a friend from college who was killed in DC in 2008 when a truck turned right through a bike lane and crushed her, so I’ve always been very safety-focused regardless of whether I’m on a bike or in a car.

I’m confused about who has the right of way after a car merges into the bike lane to turn right. According to DDOT, if you are a car wanting to turning right across a bike lane, the proper move is to wait for the cyclists to pass and then slowly merge into the bike lane before you turn right.

“Dear PoPville,

With the rise of fast casual and expanded carry out options, what’s the protocol on tipping? I notice most fast casual restaurants preset the payment system with tipping options (none, 15%, 20%, etc). Is there an expectation for tips for fast casual? What if they make you a coffee or a cocktail? Then what if you order carry out; do the same rules apply? I’m so confused!”

“Dear PoPville,

I live off 14th St NW on a quiet residential street. Last night, construction workers were doing VERY LOUD construction on our street between 11pm-2am. Around 1am I went downstairs to complain about the noise. I was one of multiple neighbors complaining. No one could sleep. Supposedly they had a permit from the city to be conducting this work until 5am but I have a hard time believing this. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Reboot of “best dry cleaners” from 4 years ago? We have this thread from about 4 years ago and I am sure a lot has changed since then. We’re looking for a place that is able to clean removable furniture covers (not needing to come to our apt). Also, where do people go for quality and affordable clothing alterations?

“Dear PoPville,

I was just subjected to a DOEE Soil Erosion and Sediment Control (ESC) review, even though I am doing a project that is exempted under Section 541 541.1(b), for projects under $9,290.38. I am going to install a permeable paving parking pad that they priced at $5800 (diy $2900, structural marked it up to market). They are trying to do away with this rule even though it is an obvious carve-out for new concrete parking pads, for which I was recently quoted $9000. Furthermore, they are collecting review and excavation fees to which they are not entitled under this exemption. Interesting no? I wonder how many people build illegally because of this rule? How much money have they collected?”

“Dear PoPville,

Would you know of a way to sponsor a DC public school student with back to school supplies? I found the supply list on the DC public school website but was wondering how to supply a kid in need. I saw something on the website about contacting schools directly. I was hoping there was a easier/lazier way…”

Ed. Note: I know DASH is collecting: (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Help me find someplace to celebrate David Berman’s life and works tonight!?”

From Pitchfork: “David Berman, the poet and songwriter known for his projects Silver Jews and Purple Mountains, has died. Drag City confirmed the news; his cause of death has not been confirmed. He was 52 years old.”

Ed. Note: I feel like Showtime would be a good place to morn but don’t know if they’re doing anything official. Anyone hear of a proper gathering to morn a great one.

“Dear PoPville,

The A/C in my large downtown D.C. apartment building has been out for nearly a week–and it could still be several days before it’s fixed.

While our building is working hard to restore it, this is not the first time we’ve dealt with A/C maintenance issues this summer, and there seems to be little accountability amid rising rents. It may be time to form a tenants’ association. (more…)

Ed. Note: Maybe they are using it as a staging ground or for part of the Ward 1 Short-Term Family Housing being built.

“Dear PoPville,

Hoping that the PoPville community can weigh in to help us figure out what’s happening with an empty lot behind our place. Between Chapin and Belmont off 14th St there’s a lot that has been overgrown (to the point where it caught fire on the 4th of July two years ago from some kids shooting fireworks into the brush) and unoccupied for the better part of three years, with three shipping containers as its only occupants (plus about a thousand rats).
