“Dear PoPville,

In my effort to “Marie Kondo” my condo, I have a sizeable collection of VHS tapes to donate or dispose of. I’ve got a little bit of everything, ranging from classic films to modern movies to workout videos, all family-friendly and on VHS. I know I can’t just chuck these things in the trash, but I also can’t let them continue to clutter my shelves either. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I received a non-filer complaint in early November concerning my 2015 taxes. I usually file by mail and did that year as well. Unfortunately, when I checked back through my 2016 statements, it does look like OTR never cashed the check I sent them. After many weeks of back and forth, OTR said they are willing to remove the penalty, a modest amount of about $130. The interest, which compounds daily at an APY of 10% and is much more (more than half of my original tax amount), they refuse to waive. My total bill is less than $1000, so no attorneys or CPAs will work with me. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

On Wednesday, it rained. I took a Lyft eight blocks. When I got out of the Lyft, I noticed the cap on the bottle of water in my purse was slightly loose and the gloves in my purse were a little damp. I then received a FIFTY dollar “damage” charge from Lyft for what I can only assume were the few droplets of water from my bottle that may have spilled on the cloth (not leather) seat. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

After being long time renters in DC we are finally buying a house! Over the years I have seen various posts about security camera rebates, green energy programs, and other helpful tips and tricks for getting the best out of the programs the city has to offer to home owners. Unfortunately a lot of this info is now out of date or scattered around the internet deep in random comment sections. My hope is to start a thread where readers can find all of these helpful tips about these programs in one place. Please share your wisdom!”

Thanks to Lara for sharing the, what looks like, a post carbque situation “in Mt. Vernon Sq. on 4th by Ridge St.”

And more importantly:

“I’d like to share the Opt to Act from REI which gives everyday citizens a 52 week guide to being a better environmental steward. Weekly challenges are assigned to give us the tools to improve our carbon footprint like opting out of junk mail (which no one wants in the first place) and how to recycle snack wrappers! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I live in Woodridge and our street was slated for leaf collection last week. We used the ‘new’ DPW app and got the notification on Fri. Nov. 22 that leaf collection would happen the week of 11/25-30. I and many neighbors followed the protocols and had leaves ready for pickup on 11/25. It was the holiday week and the crew showed up on 11/30 with their blowers and rakes and prepped the piles for vacuuming up by the truck. We saw the truck around the corner vacuuming up another nearby block around RI Ave and Monroe NE so had faith that they would turn the corner and finish the job on our street. They never showed up and it’s apparent that many other streets around the block weren’t collected either; (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I am interested in getting more fit in the new year and know there are a ton of gyms with deals, but what I’m really interested in is doing it with a group. I’m not exactly sure how to find those. Not necessarily a bootcamp, but a group of people who are not so in shape being trained by the same person consistently every week in order to get stronger and healthier! Know any groups like that? They don’t even necessarily have to be associated with a gym, although it would be nice to be in that environment. Help appreciated!”

“Dear PoPville,

Hi! My sad commuter bicycle really needs a tune up. I tried to replace the brakes myself over a year ago … got frustrated, gave up, and haven’t touched it since.

Do any fellow popville readers have any suggestions or favorite shops in DC?”

Ed. Note: With the recent closure of District Hardware and Bike as well as the The Bike Rack’s Brookland location and BicycleSpace in Adams Morgan and on K Street this will be a good thread for future reference/queries. Personally I have had great service at Conte’s Bike Shop at 3410 Wisconsin Ave, NW.

“Dear PoPville,

How in the hell do we get off the Post Marketplace mailing list? We never signed up for it, we don’t even have a subscription to the newspaper and they constantly are spamming our physical inbox with it. Waste of paper & ink, and they go into our recycling without being looked at.”

Anyone ever successfully opt out of this mailing?

“Dear PoPville,

Wanted to ask where I can get pictures done with Santa in DC? Saw Congressional Cemetery had a date available but it’s already sold out.”

A couple options I’ve gotten via email but please add yours in the comments. (more…)
