We have a simple straightforward return with normal income and deductions. Our CPA e-filed both our federal and DC tax returns on the same date of March 5, 2024.
The IRS processed our federal return in 11 days and paid the refund two days later.

Does anyone know if there is a free or inexpensive way to efile DC income taxes? I’ve used TurboTax for years, which will efile federal for free but charges $25 for DC, which just seem unconscionable.”

This is a long shot question, but after multiple discussions with my CPA and DC OTR, I am still at a loss. I have a small business and in January 2023 by the IRS we were notified that we received the Employee Retention Credit (ERC) for 2021. This is fantastic news, except now we have to refile our taxes. Why am I/what’s the reasoning behind me being unable to sign up for an online account at mytaxdc as a first time DC filer? I get that the process just doesn’t work that way but do you know/have any leads on the WHY? It makes no sense to me that to get an online account at the site to file your taxes, you have to have already filed DC taxes previously..”

Anyone with any experience refiling mailed in taxes in DC? Looks like DC govt messed up election workers tax docs (aka never sent them) so now I will need to refile. Also please note I received this notice 1 MONTH after it’s dated and AFTER taxes are due.” (more…)

I have not received my DC tax return yet. I submitted on June 17. I did receive a letter from DC Government in late June about additional verification steps needed. I went to the website and completed all the steps. I have not received a payment or any further follow up from DC Government. Is anyone else experiencing this?”
“Dear PoPville,
I received a non-filer complaint in early November concerning my 2015 taxes. I usually file by mail and did that year as well. Unfortunately, when I checked back through my 2016 statements, it does look like OTR never cashed the check I sent them. After many weeks of back and forth, OTR said they are willing to remove the penalty, a modest amount of about $130. The interest, which compounds daily at an APY of 10% and is much more (more than half of my original tax amount), they refuse to waive. My total bill is less than $1000, so no attorneys or CPAs will work with me. (more…)
