“Dear PoPville,

does anyone know where can I recycle/responsibly dispose of old clothes and textiles that are no longer in a wearable/usable condition?

I know H&M does a recycling program, however, I don’t have a car, and after I do a large purge, I’\ll end up with multiple garbage bags of stuff that has essentially become rags. So, not ideal to hop into an Uber and dump them at H&M. I was just curious if anyone knew of any other organizations who offer textile recycling, espeicaly if any offer pick up services. Right now I’ve got a pile of stuff shoved in a corner of my apt because I would really like to avoid just throwing it all in the trash and letting it go straight into the landfill. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’ve been looking around and was wondering if PoPville had any recommendations for local resume writer in DC. I’ve seen some past threads on PoPville threads about resume writers for federal jobs but couldn’t find anything related to private sector jobs. More specifically, I’d be interested in resume writers that specialize in the government affairs/ government relations sector. Does anyone in the PoPville Community have a suggestion?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m currently in the midst of a nightmare scenario with a three-story popup condo (I know, I know…lesson truly learned) I bought about 3 years ago. About a year ago, my downstairs neighbor and I started experiencing all kinds of issues with water leaking through the roof and siding from both the left and right sides of condo. We had a number of roofers come out and $30,000 later, had them reseal the roof and re-side the left side of the pop up. The problem is that to finish the job, we need to re-side the right side, which will require access to my neighbor’s roof (her townhouse is 2 stories). (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Bed bugs are creatures from nightmares. Thousands of them can hide in cracks around your home, and feed on you while you sleep. According to the CDC they are a public health hazard that causes enormous psychological and physical harm. I know – I suffered from a four-year long bed bug infestation. I own a row-home in Northwest DC. My neighbors harbored a gigantic infestation. For four years, bed bugs crawled from that neighboring property into my home through the wall we share. I repeatedly offered to pay the full cost to exterminate the infestation. My neighbors repeatedly refused. The infestation spread to five houses down our block. My ANC representative, DCRA and DOH wanted to help, but lacked the authority to step in. It took, multiple appearances in Superior Court, 4 professional exterminator companies, several community mediators, and over 30 treatments to end this nightmare. I took a second job just to pay the extermination fees. I still wake up at night when I feel a hair on my arm move because I think the bugs are back again.

My story is surprisingly common. Americans spent $611 million in 2016 combating bed bugs. Washington DC is the second most infested city in the country. Those treatment costs are so high because of multi-dwelling infestations–infestations that cover several adjoining apartments or row-homes. In one case, an infestation that began in one unit spread to 68 others costing more than $200,000 over 3 years. Multi-dwelling infestations persist because a few occupants refuse to get treatment.

Tragically, tenants and low-income residents in DC are the most at risk. (more…)

14th and W Street, NW

“Dear PoPville,

Up 14th there are several intersections where the crosswalk is now gone due to repaving (and repaying, and so forth). Any intel on when they’ll be restored? It’s hazardous as is because cars can’t tell where to stop and block the entire crosswalk area.”

“Dear PoPville,

Yesterday I was exiting the Ft Totten station when I noticed that the guy in front of me had a rather unusual hoodie on. It had a “D***suckers Hall of Fame” written on top and explicit pictures of what I guess were memorable performances. I brought this to the station manager’s attention and he simply said “welcome to America” and told me to mind my own business. I wa running late to a dentist appointment and the guy was lurking nearby so I didn’t want to get into whether or pornography is protected speech in metro, but is it?”

“Dear PoPville,

We are looking for recommendations for a skilled carpenter, who could build/install built-in bookshelves on a wall in our basement. We would love recommendations from the PoPville community. I’ve included a picture below of something similar to what we have in mind. Thank you!!”

“Dear PoPville,

With the holidays fast approaching, I am looking for local DC stores that sell unique, quirky gifts for white elephants, stocking stuffers and the like. We used to go to Home Rule for a lot of those fun, little things that bring smiles, but with them closing I’ve been on the hunt for a good replacement that is not World Market. (more…)
