“Dear PoPville,

Tonight (Friday) around 7:15 my fiancé and I went to go grab a bite at cinder bbq (8th and Upshur St, NW.) Our puppy Lucy knocked over an easel which terrified her which caused her to bolt and slip out of her harness. Before our eyes Lucy was sprinting up upshur street. The entire community of people out around 7:15pm shouted, stopped cars, and unquestionably saved Lucy from a very terrible incident. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m reaching out because I had my first dose of the Pfizer vaccine at the Lamond rec center in NE yesterday. They didn’t give me a date/time for my second appt, but they gave me a link to book a new appt that didn’t show any availability. When I called back to the rec center someone said I could just show up 21 days from today at the same time my appointment was today.

My question for the community is: has anybody had success getting their second Pfizer dose in DC? Is it a safe gamble to just show up three weeks from today and hope for the best?”

“Dear PoPville,

When the Vision Zero Omnibus bill was made law at the end of December, part of it was making it illegal to drive a motor vehicle with headphones/earbuds in both ears in the District (unless they are hearing aids).

Ban on headphones while driving pgs 8 and 9 (PDF)

Here’s the link with the timeline that has every date update on the legislation, including when the bill was passed.

I’ve worked with the Council of DC for almost three years to get it added to DC traffic code after almost getting hit by a SUV driver with headphones in in summer 2018, and now it’s officially law! (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I have a bit of a complicated situation (related to the DMV) that I could use some help with. I moved to DC in May with my car. Due to the stress of the DMV and lack of available appointments, I have not changed my car’s registration over from my home state of NC yet. In January I was in an accident and my car was declared a total loss by the insurance agency, despite it only being minor damage. Fast forward to now and my car is finally fixed, but from what I understand I can’t legally drive it unless it gets inspected by the DMV. Is this right? (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I’m having trouble with our neighbor who has taken the liberty to block a spot off of public street parking so he can easily move in and out of his driveway (located to the right of the sign). After several neighbors have had to move it out of the way to parallel park and moving it to the sidewalk (because how in the world is anyone suppose to get in and out of that spot with it in the way), he has now proceeded to dump all of this to block the entire spot! “Dear PoPville,

My partner and I are looking to get engaged and married in the next few months and could really use some jewelry store recommendations. We’d rather not buy online or from a big chain store, if possible, but are looking to get a good deal and help out a local business. Because of covid, we’ve avoided roaming into store unnecessarily. We’re looking for a traditional diamond engagement ring and gold wedding bands, and possibly someone who creates custom jewelry pieces using gold/gems from pieces we won’t wear but have sentimental meaning. For example, my grandmother left me rings that are way too big for me and not my style but could be repurposed (I think) into something I would wear. I know I could trade in the gold and buy design a new piece with the stones and new gold, but I’d rather not.

Really hoping someone out there can help us. We understand of the engagement/wedding rings are easier to get from a big store but figured it was worth a shot asking this group.”

“Dear PoPville,

I was laid off and received a severance payment at the beginning of August. My understanding is that unemployment office needs to verify the credibility of severance before continuing with weekly UI payments but will issue back pay for the weeks it took to verify the severance payment. This is what I was reassured by a number of operators when I called the unemployment hotline throughout the summer and early fall.

I filled out the initial fact finding survey to verify my severance, but then in November I was told to fill out another fact finding survey and then again in December. Calling the hotline doesn’t get me anywhere really because the phone operators obviously don’t have the power to clear what’s holding up my case. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Monday, March 1, I jumped into the Potomac River to save my dog Enzo, who had chased some geese and didn’t stop at the edge (he may not have seen it well, as he has only one eye). My nephew and I were walking him and we were on the grassy stretch near the Kennedy Center, where the river’s walls are steep and high and I couldn’t find anywhere nearby to direct my dog to take refuge or where I could clamber down to get him. I was in a panic. (more…)
