The new Italian restaurant, Lupo Verde, has made a ton of progress at the northwest corner of 14th and T Street, NW. Their website says the restaurant will be “Rustic Italian Cuisine” from the folks behind Station 4 in Southwest Waterfront, Tunnicliffs Tavern by Eastern Market, and Ulah Bistro on U Street. I popped in for a quick peek and was told they are on track for an opening the last week of September. Updates when they get closer to opening.

“Dear PoPville,

Do you know what happened to Coppi’s? For a while they said they would be back in 2013 but that sign (and all sign of Coppi’s) is gone. Any word?”

I wondered the same thing back in December ’12. While I think officially they are supposed to return to this space I’ve been hearing some rumors that they’ve also been looking at some alternate locations. Anyone else hear something recently?

Back in January I confirmed some scuttlebutt that a Cuban restaurant was coming to the former Singapore Bistro space next to Science Club on 19th Street between L and M. Coming soon signage has now been posted and they’ve done a ton of work on the space. They have a location in New York and you can see their menu here.. I’m really psyched to see them save the great bay windows on the side:

Chef Timothy Dean

Back in April we learned that a TD Burger from Chef Timothy Dean of Top Chef fame would be opening up a new spot in the former Zuppa Fresca space in the Loree Grand at the corner of 3rd and K St, NE. They open up on Monday at 4pm and I was able to step inside for a quick look and chat with the chef.

I have to admit I don’t watch Top Chef (I don’t have cable), so I promise I wasn’t starstruck, but Chef Dean is a very very cool dude. Super nice and super enthusiastic about the space. Also he’s originally from DC – the Kenilworth neighborhood near the aquatic gardens. Anyway, a bit about the space – There’s seating for 68 inside and 60 outside. In addition to burgers there will be, pizza, wings, salads and sandwiches. The service will be fast and quality. You order by the door and then get a number to place at your table and a runner will bring your food. However, there will be a full bar so a cocktail server will come by if you want to order a drink:

A full bar including 6 beers on tap and 60-65 craft beers in bottles and cans

They open Monday at 4pm but after 10 days or so they will also open for lunch. And while delivery could be available in the future – carryout will also be available right away.

Lots of patio seating for up to 60:

Hours of operation:

M-TH 11 am – 10 pm; bar & late-night menu 10 pm – midnight
F-Sa 11 am – 11 pm; bar & late-night menu 11 pm – 1 am
Sun 11 am – 10 pm

Oh yeah, one more thing – plans are for a bistro concept from Dean coming “to this side of town” in the near future too!

More photos and a look at the full menu after the jump. (more…)

@toddkliman tweets the sad news:

“Big #DCrestaurant news: Eola, the inventive, offal-loving tasting menu restaurant in Dupont, will close. Last night of service: Aug. 31”

Eola’s website says:

“Regretfully Eola’s last service will be August 31st. The past four years have been an incredible ride and I’m proud of what we have accomplished. I would to extend my gratitude to my staff both past and present. Without their hard work and dedication, Eola would not have existed. I would also like to thank our guests of the past four years for their support.

Daniel Singhofen”

From a press release:

“Several new regulations go into effect today that impact businesses licensed to sell and serve alcoholic beverages in the District. The Alcoholic Beverage Control Board (Board) adopted the new rules to help clarify alcoholic beverage regulations and as a result of public comments it had received.

One of the most notable rule changes is the elimination of a $25 cap on corking fees. As a result, ABC licensed restaurants, taverns, hotels, nightclubs and multipurpose facilities are now able to set their own fee for opening bottles of wine that patrons bring to their establishments as long as the cost is disclosed to the patron prior to opening the bottle.

Another new rule allows all businesses that are in the process of obtaining a liquor license to apply for a temporary—or stipulated—license. Stipulated licenses allow a business to sell alcoholic beverages before obtaining their permanent license. In order to apply, a business must have the support of its Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) and pay a $100 fee. Previously, retailers like convenience, grocery and liquor stores were not able to obtain stipulated licenses under District alcohol regulations.

New criteria have been finalized for businesses that want to be considered full-service grocery stores. These retailers are one of the few types of stores in the District that are still eligible to apply for a new license to sell beer and wine for off-premises consumption. To be considered a full-service grocery store, a retailer would need to sell a full line of defined food products and dedicate a specific amount of square footage to the sale of those food products.”

From a press release:

Piola, which specializes in Italian-style thin-crust pizza, will premiere its “No Limit” Pizza Brunch this Saturday, August 17 from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. In addition to unlimited wood-fired pies, brunch-goers can also opt to add bottomless sparkling drinks and sangria.

Brunch offerings at the 14th Street restaurant, which opened to the public in June, currently include over 10 pies that range from classic Italian combinations like the Capricciosa (tomato sauce, mozzarella, ham, artichoke and mushrooms) to international varieties such as the Breakfast in Beirut (“zaatar” and olive oil, served with “labneh,” olives, tomatoes, cucumbers and fresh mint) and plays on traditional brunch fare like the Cancun (tomato sauce, mozzarella, onions, smoked salmon, cream cheese and capers). Those looking for something stronger than coffee can indulge in unlimited sangria and sparkling drinks like bellinis, house-squeezed orange juice mimosas, rossinis and Aperol Spritz – a classic Venetian cocktail made with orange liqueur.

Brunch will be served Saturdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. Guests can enjoy unlimited pizza for $15.95 ($7.95 for kids) and add bottomless sangria and sparkling drinks for an additional $15.”
