13th and E Street, NW
From a press release:
“The presence of D.C.’s most renowned political boss will once again impact this city when Boss Shepherd’s opens a block from the John A. Wilson (formerly the District) Building , at 13th & E Streets, NW, next to the Warner Theater, this July.
“We plan to bring a dynamic restaurant, filled with DC’s power players, to Penn Quarter this summer. There will be more sizzling than just the sidewalk this July,” revealed renowned DC restaurateur and founder, Paul J. Cohn.
Boss Shepherd’s takes a modern, fresh approach to traditional American dining, serving familiar comfort dishes with a distinctive and creative flair. Committed to a farm-to-table use of locally sourced ingredients, Executive Chef Jeremy Waybright offers fresh classics made from scratch. The new restaurant boasts diverse lunch and dinner menus that combine seasonal ingredients with bold flavors.
Patrons can expect a diverse cocktail, wine and local craft beer list comprised of many iconic labels from around the region. The beverage menu will boast specialty drinks including the Signature Boss Shepherd cocktail.
The new restaurant is named after DC’s original governor, often referred to as the Father of Modern Washington — one of the most powerful big-city bosses of his day, who was responsible for creating DC’s post-Civil War infrastructure. Thanks to the city improvements made by Boss Shepherd, the U.S. Congress was encouraged to remain in the District of Columbia, and our capital city became a vibrant, viable, and green city. A statue of Boss Shepherd, a native Washingtonian, can be seen from the restaurant, standing watch in front of the building that houses DC’s center of government.
The restaurant will offer lunch and dinner Monday – Friday, and dinner only on Saturday.”

From an email:
“We have had a very busy spring and are happy to make a few changes for the summer with our new summer menu just introduced. We literally took our most popular dish (chicken schnitzel) and made it better (at least we think and hope so :-) ) and while doing that, we came up with some other options (pork and vegeterian) and introduced number of toppings, treating the schnitzel kind of like a pizza. Anyway, we had a great time coming up with the new menu and hope it will be loved by our regulars. So, the question of the day is, do you like the new menu?”

1501 9th Street, NW formerly Mandalay Burmese restaurant which closed at 9th and P St, NW in May
From a press release:
“Mixologists and brothers Ari and Micah Wilder, along with their partners Armin Amin and Adrian Williams, are pleased to announce the July anticipated opening of Chaplin Cocktail Bar at 1501 9th Street, NW. Chaplin is a nod to Sir Charles Spencer “Charlie” Chaplin, an English actor, comedian and filmmaker who rose to fame in the silent era. The restaurant will showcase cocktails from the 1920’s with a unique, handcrafted twist. Chaplin will serve Monday through Thursday from 4 PM to 12 AM; Friday from 4 PM to 1 AM; Saturday from 12 Noon to 1 AM, and Sunday from 12 Noon to 12 AM.
Ari and Micah Wilder have a rich mixology background with 29 years of combined experience. While Micah was opening cocktail bars throughout San Francisco, his younger brother Ari was following his lead in Washington, DC. Then, in 2008, Micah joined his brother in the nation’s capital to found Wilder Bros LLC, a cocktail consulting company. The dynamic duo created over a dozen cocktail programs throughout the city since launching their company. They also opened their first venture together, Fed Restaurant in May, 2013 and supply cocktail programs throughout the city with their proprietary mixers and lost ingredients.
The cocktails at Chaplin will be influenced and named after Charlie Chaplin’s comedic films. Standouts include the Gold Rush, Champagne, Montenegro amaro, peach liqueur, peach bitters and golden flake; The Tramp, rye whiskey, Bénédictine, Peychaud’s bitters and burned orange peel; The Vagabond, Tom Cat gin, blanc vermouth, lemon bitters and tonic; The Pilgrim, Genever, Crème de Violet, ginger beer and lime; Lime Light, vodka, Leopold’s apple liqueur, green apple soda and lime vin; Sunny Side, made from a combination of three rums, orange Curaçao, cherry liqueur, Peychaud’s bitter and pineapple with citrus; By The Sea, Speyside scotch, Porto, apricot liqueur, Champagne and lemon, and the Laughing Gas, Blue Coat gin, blackberry liqueur and lemon laughing gas soda, which is made combining helium to their house-made soda to create laughter while imbibing. Cocktails are priced at $10 each.
Design and fabrication agency SwatchRoom will be responsible for the interior scheme for Chaplin. The two story, 83-seat dining room will be enveloped by the nostalgia of a flickering black and white cinematic experience. The space will feature layers of antiquated textures and artifacts from film and entertainment. Bold accents of rich gold and reds can be found throughout the space leading to the private Opium Den located on the second floor. Additionally, an expansive 80-seat outdoor patio “Piano Bar” will be available during the spring and summer months, and is sure to become a neighborhood gathering place.”

1337 Connecticut Ave, NW
A couple weeks ago we learned the shuttered sports bar, The Gryphon, would transform into a “Meat & Raw Bar Social House” on Connecticut Ave just south of Dupont Circle. Their website now says:
“The Meat & Raw Bar Food Experience
The Gryphon is a new dining concept in Washington, DC from the owners of Lost Society, a boutique steakhouse on the corner of 14th St. and U St., NW.
Just as Lost Society changed the traditional perception of a steakhouse, the Gryphon is designed to change the perception of dining with friends, family and neighbors.
The Gryphon is a Meat & Raw Bar Social House. These words encompass the entire dining experience presented at the Gryphon.”
On their facebook page the description continues:
“The food experience is “meat-centric” with a heavy emphasis on beef. But the menu includes a variety of options for pork, lamb, seafood and, of course, an outstanding oyster based raw bar that includes shrimp, lobster and clams.
Our philosophy, is to bring out the experience of enjoying the meats and other food on the menu through two things:
The Preparation – such as curing, grilling, broiling, roasting and aging; and
The Presentation – EVERYTHING is plated to share or “pre-cut.” We encourage all of our guests to order with that in mind.
Social dining provides ours guest with exceptional food and drink (specially crafted cocktails, selected beers and wine) and puts them together in a lively, fun, and energetic atmosphere at the Gryphon. The Gryphon is our “house” and our guests should feel as if they were invited to a well planned neighborhood dinner party with their closest friends, family and neighbors. To us, this is more than just getting food out at a restaurant, it’s the experience of dining together and being connected to one another through the food and drink. Hence the term, Social House.
As such, sharing is the aspect that completes the dining experience. That experience is incomplete without friends, family and neighbors. Effectively, the food and drink connect us to one another, and we are connected to one another through the food and drink.
Here at the Gryphon we encourage eating and drinking to socialize and socializing through eating and drinking. Whether it’s through dinner, lunch, brunch or just a drink at the bar, the Gryphon is designed to be a friendly, engaging and energetic place where friends, family and neighbors can regularly meet to catch up and/or celebrate, or just make new friends altogether.”
And they’ve posted their new menu outside:

Still scuttlebutt at this point but a reliable source hears a Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop is coming to the former Philadelphia Cheesesteak Factory space in Georgetown. Capriotti’s opened their first DC location at 1800 M Street, NW in Nov. 2013:
“Capriotti’s Sandwich Shop, founded in Wilmington, DE and long a favorite of Delaware beach-goers, expands its presence on the East Coast as it opens its first location Thursday, November 21 in the Nation’s Capital at 18th and M Streets NW.”
Anyone check out the 18th and M Street spot yet? If so, any good sandwich recs? How do they compare to a Taylor Gourmet or Potbelly?

3407 Connecticut Ave, NW
Last we heard back in Feb. there was some scuttlebutt that Picca Pollo A La Brasa would be taking over the former Pulpo, former Tackle Box, former McDonald’s space in Cleveland Park. Thanks to a reader for sending word about the new Shiner Bock coming soon signage:

The Washington Post reported:
“The owners of the Cleveland Park Bar and Grill will take over the space and turn it into a barbecue joint.”

3421 Connecticut Ave, NW
Here’s to hoping it’s good BBQ and that a BBQ joint will last here.
Side note: I like how the front door says “Welcome. Out of Business”:

3150 M Street, NW
Well the home of the $1000 Golden Opulence Sundae is no more. Serendipity 3 has closed in the prime corner of Wisconsin and M St, NW formerly home to Nathan’s before Serendipity 3.

Washingtonian noted the closure last week and also adds:
“Under Armour founder Kevin Plank recently bought the building…Rumors of the sports clothing store moving into Wisconsin Avenue and M Street, Northwest, have abounded since.”
