Back in April we learned Beau Thai would be moving from their NJ and R St, NW location to the corner of 7th and P St, NW in the new Jefferson MarketPlace building this Fall. They’ve now applied for a liquor license and word on the street is that something good will be coming to the NJ and R Street location – stay tuned.

The Navy Yard Oyster Company

From a press release:

“Brine, wine and stunning waterfront panoramas are coming to The Yards as the ink dries on Forest City Washington’s newest lease signing. Tenured Washington, DC restaurateurs and friends August Paro and Elias Hengst, founders of Beuchert’s Saloon and Sonoma Restaurant & Wine Bar, respectively, and Forest City Washington are excited to jointly announce the addition of The Navy Yard Oyster Company.

The new oyster and wine bar is the second joint project by Paro & Hengst and will occupy a 1,887 square foot waterfront/parkfront space on the south side of the historic Lumber Shed building at The Yards, featuring stunning views of the southeast waterfront and Yards Park. Opening is planned for Spring 2015.

The Navy Yard Oyster Company will occupy a soaring, two story, light-filled space capped by the 40-foot, exposed roof truss work of the historic original Navy Yard building. The restaurant design is inspired by the building’s ties to US Naval history, Washington, DC, and to the water itself. (more…)

UPDATE Thanks to a commenter for pointing out that it looks like these are just old permits. Whew.

“Dear PoPville,

The ‘another Ray’s joint’ that was to be on K between 4th and 5th now has permits posted for a hot yoga studio. Affiliated with the Vida next door, maybe? Regardless, I’m disappointed.”

Very strange. Back in Jan. it looked like there was real progress being made at the future Ray’s:

Thanks to all who sent emails about the Charlie Chaplin Bar opened in the former Mandalay Burmese restaurant space at the corner of 9th and P St, NW.

“Chaplin is a nod to Sir Charles Spencer “Charlie” Chaplin, an English actor, comedian and filmmaker who rose to fame in the silent era. Chaplin Restaurant & Bar will be serving up Asian-inspired cuisine that will take diners on a journey to Japan and Shanghai in the 1920s, when muted films were appreciated globally for embracing and unifying separation thru emotion, expression, comedy, originality, risk, sorrow and entertainment.”

Anyone stop by?

@eslashe tweets us this link from Craigslist LET ME FEED YOU POTATO SKINS (TGI Friday’s Foggy Bottom):

“Over the last month, we’ve all gotten used to standing around with strangers in bars after work, sharing in the spectacle of the World Cup, and bonding over our shared love of friendly competition and Michael Ballack.

But after this weekend, what will we do now to become friends with strangers? How can we keep these collective good vibes rolling? I don’t care what your skinny friend says: We’re not going to get excited about the Tour de France, even if they start showing it on all the screens at the Big Hunt.

I suggest we look to ourselves. I suggest we look to America. I suggest we share Endless Appetizers at TGI Friday’s.

This Monday, July 14, let’s say around 6-ish, let’s all go to the Foggy Bottom TGI Friday’s.

We will order one plate of Loaded Potato Skins. We will order no other solid foods, because this plate will be endless. You will order beer. I will order a whiskey soda. An intern in a dress will order white wine. Someone will order a frozen rita and feel regret.

You, me, and dozens of our best friends, sharing one order of food THAT I WILL PAY FOR, all night long. Ten dollars American, feeding the masses.

It’s a bit like Jesus, isn’t it? No surprise there. Because this is America.”

Noteworthy passage:

Fridays will respect whatever tack customers take — even if it bends the rules of the promotion. “No one should be embarrassed for coming into Fridays and ordering whatever they want to order,” he says. “They will not be bawled out. There will be no policing or hand-slapping.”

Ed. Note: TGIFridays website says:

“Buy one appetizer at $10 each (per person) and get free refills on same appetizer. Valid on select items only. At participating restaurants for a limited time. Dine-in only. One offer per person, per visit. Not valid in conjunction with any other coupon, promotion or discount. While supplies last. Tax and gratuity not included. © 2014 TGI Friday’s Inc. Please drink responsibly.”

At long last Lunchbox opens in the Chevy Chase pavilion today. It’s located in the lower level near the Starbucks and World Market. Voltaggio’s RANGE is located on the third floor of the pavilion.

Lunchbox’s facebook page says:

“Dear PoPville,

Ana finally got her menu printed—and it is quite something to behold, on many levels! The typos, starting with the incorrect address and days of the week, the foods not matching their titles, the giant black fish on a plate, and my favorite, the whole chicken: it comes with rice and beans, yet the photo is of a whole chicken resting on a plate of French fries. I also like the jalapeno with the Mexican flag on the front panel.

ana’s_menu (PDF)

I will say though, the food is absolutely awesome. I got 3 tacos, rice and bean for only $9 the other day, and they cook it from scratch right in front of you.”
