From a press release:

“WHAT: Hello, Toli Moli! A Burmese Dessert Pop-Up
WHERE: EatsPlace, 3607 Georgia Avenue NW, Washington, D.C. 20010
WHEN: January 30, 2016, 11:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.
COST: Free Entry, $7-9 per serving

On Saturday, January 30, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., Jocelyn Law-Yone and her daughter, Simone Jacobson, will introduce Toli Moli, their unique Burmese dessert concept, at the food incubator and restaurant accelerator EatsPlace.

During this one-time special event and company launch, Washingtonians will be the first to taste Toli Moli’s three distinct flavors of falooda, a layered dessert drink popular throughout Southeast Asia and the Middle East. Drawing inspiration from the many variations of this beloved street snack, Toli Moli’s novelty faloodas are stacked with superfoods and use primarily natural ingredients. After a year of experimenting to create her own falooda with the best possible ingredients, Chef JoJo (Law-Yone) will debut a limited menu at the Toli Moli launch, including mango, coffee and pomegranate flavors of falooda “shakes”, reminiscent of the sweetest bites of her childhood in Burma. Update – full press release from Jackie’s:

“Jackie’s Restaurant, a Silver Spring institution for over 11 years, plans to close on or about March 31, 2016. Opened in 2004 by co-owners Jackie Greenbaum and Patrick Higgins, Jackie’s was the first chef-driven “farm to table” restaurant to open in Silver Spring’s history. Coinciding with the incipient revitalization of Silver Spring, Jackie’s opened the same year as Discovery Communications’ headquarters and the American Film Institute—all signaling a new era for the region. Its arrival marked a turning point for Silver Spring as it garnered attention as a dining destination, in part due to its initial affiliation with James Beard award winning chef Ann Cashion.

“Jackie’s has been and always will be my proudest achievement,” said Jackie Greenbaum. “Not just for its brilliant food and atmosphere—which is pretty badass—but for the community it created in Silver Spring.” The bar and restaurant has become a home away from home for many Silver Spring and Takoma Park residents, and has hosted many memorable events. In 2005, it held the premiere reception for the academy award winning film “Crash,” with director and cast in attendance. In 2007, it was the home of the AFI’s SilverDocs hospitality center, ending with a blowout block party for Mayor Marion Barry’s documentary film, which included a performance by legendary DC go-go band Trouble Funk. Additionally, Jackie’s has received consistently high critical praise over its many years of operation. (more…)

My favorite comment from IntangibleArts when we judged Mehak back in 2010:

“I call this one decent “utility-grade” curry. That is, when you wake up & your first thought is I MUST HAVE A CURRY FIX TODAY, like a classic addict (guilty!), it’s a suitable methodone. Not the best but far from wretched. But then, I’d rather have a bad curry than a GOOD anything else.

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with “middle of the road”… ask any possum on the B/W parkway.

what?”

“Dear PoPville,

I saw the below sign on Bistro Bohem‘s door the other day and was wondering if you knew anything about the change in ownership or had any intel about this. Looking at the new hours of operation, does this mean no more morning coffee shop? If so, a real loss to the community.”

And I pray they don’t mess with the schnitzel. I suppose for morning coffee – folks can head nearby to The Royal. Updates when more is known.

The universal is a magical place. After mentioning Senor Chicken earlier I was thinking to myself – what the hell is going on with that spot. And I log onto my email this morning and one of the first things I see is this note:

“It appears that Señor Chicken on Park Rd in. Columbia Heights is rising from the ashes as…a restaurant?”

Awesome. Only the demo permit has been posted but we’ll definitely keep our eyes peeled for the building permit. Maybe it’ll be the Banh Mi and Sushi spot we heard about back in 2013. Stay tuned.

We haven’t had this much chicken news (The Chickery, Nando’s, The Bird, not to mention all the street chicken sightings) since Senor Chicken burst on the scene, briefly, back in ’09. All I can say is keep ’em coming.

This is of course the former Bistro on U Street that only lasted about a month here. The liquor license placard for Just Chicken says:

“NATURE OF OPERATION
Tavern serving American Cuisine with a Total Occupancy Load of 40 seats. Request made for Entertainment Endorsement.

HOURS OF OPERATION
Sunday through Saturday 24 Hours
