“Dear PoPville,

Perhaps I’m just frustrated, but I know many of my neighbors are feeling the same way. It seems like in our neighborhood, there have been a lot of big deal restaurants that have been in a stage of development for months if not years.
There are at least 3 restaurants in particular:

1. Hilltop – which has been coming soon for over a year
2. Tipsy Peacock– which has been “about to open” according to its owner since late 2014 and
3. Most discouragingly, Midlands, the much hyped beer garden whose website still says opening in Summer.

Do you have any updates on any of these restaurants? Also, is this a thing that affects all restaurants? Or is there something special about ours that is making it difficult to open these locations?”

Thanks to a reader for sending:

“Villa Tuscana – fine Italian cuisine” is coming “soon” to (at least half) of the old Chief Ike’s space. at least according to the banner that’s up today.”

Back in December we reported a liquor license had been posted for Villa Tuscana:

“New Italian restaurant. Total Occupancy Load: 123. Inside seating for 99 patrons. Sidewalk Café seating 24 patrons. Entertainment Endorsement.”

Sounds like they’re getting – updates when we have an exact opening date.

Heat Da Spot Cafe opened up back in June of last year. Any fans?

The liquor license placard says:

“Restaurant serving sandwiches, coffee and pastries with a seating capacity for 17. Summer Garden endorsement request with outdoor seating for 20 patrons. Total Occupancy Load of 24.”

Update: Alas it was a typo in the WBJ post – this is the Cava Grill coming to 8th Street in the Shay that we’ve spoken about a few times.

Thanks to Barred in DC for passing on from the Washington Business Journal (RIP Permit Blog, congrats on the promotion!):

“1921 18th St. NW: Alterations for a new restaurant tenant, Cava Mezze Grill, in 2,380 square feet on the first floor. The restaurant will seat 74.”

You can see Cava Grill’s menu here. Updates as construction progresses.

That’s alotta burgers – the placard for Wahlburgers coming to the former Ping Pong Dim space says:

“New “C” Restaurant with 183 seats and a Total Occupancy Load of 424. Applicant has also requested a Sidewalk Café with 74 seats.”
