Excited to see how this turns out from the folks behind Brooklyn Winery:
“District Winery will occupy 16,000 SF as the sole tenant of a new pavilion building to be developed by Forest City just east of the existing Lumber Shed. Construction is scheduled to begin in spring 2016 with opening projected for fall 2017.”
Their website adds:
“From the team behind Brooklyn Winery, District Winery will produce small batch artisanal wines on site. This new space will also offer a restaurant featuring refined cuisine and a full service private event venue ideal for elegant weddings, corporate gatherings, and other celebrations. Coming 2017 to The Yards.”

From a press release:
“Haikan (805 V Street NW) – the 2nd Sapporo-style ramen shop from the talented team behind Daikaya including partners Daisuke Utagawa, Chef Katsuya Fukushima, and Yama Jewayni – will open at the Atlantic Plumbing Building on Saturday, August 27th at 5pm beginning with dinner service only. Haikan will be the third restaurant to open in Washington DC from the Daikaya team – following closely on the heels of recently opened Japanese chicken ramen shop Bantam King – and will serve as the team’s second eatery to open offering up a variety of traditional Sapporo-style ramen. Haikan will be open 7 days a week for dinner, with plans to launch brunch and lunch service in the future.
Featuring 2,120-square feet on the interior ground level of JBG Companies Atlantic Plumbing Building, Haikan will offer a completely new selection of traditional Sapporo-style ramen, different from the variety of ramen currently offered at both Daikaya and Bantam King including Shio, Shoyu, Miso, and Vegetable. The Shio showcases the delicate and complex chintan stock providing a hint of seafood flavor. For the shoyu ramen, the team at Haikan decided to go back to the taste of the classic Showa period, which served as the first golden age of ramen in Japan. Haikan’s complex stock is brightened by fresh soy sauce flavor. Invented in Sapporo, miso ramen uses a lighter, gentler miso with sesame seeds to match the stock. And Haikan’s vegetable ramen is 100% vegetarian. The team uses vegetable stock and miso as the base for the soup, which is slightly spicy and extremely rich in flavor.

And in addition to ramen, Executive Chef Katsuya Fukushima will be sharing a playful selection of Japanese-inspired small plates, priced between $8 to $10 each, such as Mapo Tofu Poutine, Smashed Cucumber Salad, Crab Rangoons, Kakigori, and a Pea-sar Salad, just to highlight a few dishes. The ramen shop will offer seating for 99 with 59 seats indoors, and 40 seats outdoors. Haikan’s bar program – a collective team effort – will debut an inventive collection of Japanese-inspired handcrafted cocktails, and a concentrated selection of Japanese sake, shochu, beer, whisky, and more. The outdoor patio area will feature a large communal table and during nicer weather pivot doors can be opened connecting the interior of Haikan to the large patio area.

From an email:
“EatWell DC’s new restaurant and bar The Bird will land again at The Pig (1320 14th Street, NW) with a two-day pop-up on Saturday, September 17, 2016 and Sunday, September 18, 2016. The beak-to-toe preview will showcase brunch from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. each day, as well as Early Bird At The Bar from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.
Reservations are recommended, and can be made by calling 202-290-2821 or emailing [email protected]. Online reservations will not be accepted.
While the menu, crafted by Executive Chef at The Pig & The Bird’s partner Michael Bonk, is still in development, diners can expect a sampling of starters and breakfast meats such as amish chicken sausage and organic free range turkey bacon. A “Birdcuterie Board” will feature capon rillettes, duck prosciutto, pheasant galntine, mustards, pickles and toast. A clutch of egg dishes are also slated for the brunch menu, with items such as Duck Hash with a sunny duck egg, zucchini, squash, onions and duck jus, as well as a Smoked Chicken Benedict with brined, smoked, pulled amish organic chicken, poached eggs, yuzu hollandaise and biscuits.
The poultry-centric concept will showcase four seasons of fowl, as the menu will change four times a year with the seasons, sourcing vegetables from Eatwell DC’s EatWell Natural Farm in La Plata MD, and meat from local poultry producers. The menu is inspired by poultry dishes from around the world using chicken & capon, duck, quail, turkey, squab, grouse, goose and ostrich and all of their various parts and pieces, as well as their eggs. The Bird will hatch this October at 1337 11th St NW, DC at the SE corner of 11th & O.”

“Pollo Granjero, Columbia and Ontario NW is emptying out – no tables and chairs. Is something new coming?”
We judged them back in 2009 to less than stellar reviews but with the new hotel and restaurant coming nearby this could be a pretty prime spot – updates when we learn more.

Thanks to a reader for sending word that The Avenue is coming to the former Tian Tian Fang space in Chevy Chase. Since the design is by Swatchroom, I’m anticipating a beautiful buildout. Now coming this Fall but I dig the vision:

Thanks to a reader for sending word about the Shaw Bijou update from the Washington Post:
“The Shaw Bijou, 1544 Ninth St. NW. Opens Nov. 1 for dinner. 5:30 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. $185 tickets go on sale Monday via Tock.”
That would be $185 not including drinks. The reader included one word with the email: “Oof.”
So, Friday Question of the Day – here we are: How much would you spend per person at a restaurant? Presumably for many this would be a splurge so what would warrant the loosening of the purse strings? A very special birthday like a 25th, 30th, 40th etc.? New job? Anniversary? The Nationals win the World Series?
Ed. Note: We had an interesting more general FQotD last year talking about How Much do you Budget/Spend per week on Food?

“Looks like a new restaurant, Zippin’ Chicken & Fish, is opening in Park View on corner of Georgia & Harvard. It says “Opening Real Soon.”
Ed. Note: For a minute in 2011 there was a Zippin Chicken located at 2851 Georgia Ave, NW. Updates when this one opens.

“Taylor Gourmet tried to remodel their restaurant based on a simple post card permit and without structural drawings. The store is still closed with the stop work order issued and will likely not open for another six months.”
