ZPizza replacement solved – Poke Papa. Washingtonian reports:

“In addition to raw fish like ahi tuna, salmon, and yellowtail, proteins will include Thai-style minced chicken salad and tofu. The bowls will be finished with a range of sauces (wasabi shoyu, yuzu, sriracha aioli) and toppings (mango, seaweed salad, avocado). The meals will come in three sizes ranging from around $7.49 to $12.99 with two to six “scoops” of proteins.”

Stand by for a “mid-March” opening. Updates when we learn the exact date.

Back in January we reported that Poki District would be coming to the former Amorini Panini space at 906 F Street, NW so Penn Quarter is all squared away on the Poke front.

First of all, The Whitman condo residents facing this alley who are PoPville readers – how could you not email me this?!?!? This is my bread and butter and I have to read about it in the home of Washington’s best doctors?!? Just kidding, I’m a big Jessica Sidman fan and I’m glad she was able to dig into this story which is absolutely ridiculous:

“Tim alleges he has long observed leaky cooking oil drums and overflowing dumpsters attracting rats in the alley behind Corduroy and Baby Wale.

So, on February 17, Tim emailed the health department outlining a long list of grievances. On Feb. 21, health inspectors showed up at both restaurants. It was the second time within about a month they had responded to complaints about the establishments. Both times, they found no major violations.

Shortly after, a banner appeared in the back of Corduroy, facing the condo building, with a message:

“YOU NEED A BOYFRIEND!”

Read the full story in Washingtonian here.

So – thoughts? Funny? Legit reaction to the frustration or just being a jackass? How long should he leave the sign up?

I stopped by on Sunday days after the story was first reported and was sure the sign would be gone. Nope. There was a cop checking it out though…

shophouse

Nikhil‏ shares some scuttlebutt:

“very upset to break this news, but… Shophouse is closing ALL locations 3/17. Confirmed with the awesome employees at Georgetown location.”

Back in October we learned this would likely happen but it still stings. ShopHouse’s DC locations are at 1516 Connecticut Ave, NW in Dupont, 2805 M Street, NW in Georgetown, 710 7th Street, NW in Chinatown and the first floor of Union Station. Updates when we learn what Chipotle does with the spaces.

crisp
1837 1st Street, NW

Ed. Note: Post will be updated and/or please feel free to leave other restaurants in the comments.

From Crisp (Bloomingdale):

“we are donating 10% of our Entire Sales (including our $5 Happy Hour) to N Street Village Shelter for Women.”

From Nido (Woodridge):

“Nido (2214 Rhode Island Avenue NE) will be participating in the international A Day Without A Woman strike that will take place on International Women’s Day, this Wednesday, March 8, 2017.

Nido is a woman-owned business with a majority female staff (only three males on staff), so on Wednesday the restaurant will be run by two male employees as well as male family members and friends that have volunteered to help execute service. They will offer a full bar and a limited menu from 5:30pm-10pm. (more…)

armands
226 Massachusetts Avenue, NE

Update: End of an era. Thanks to a commenter for finding on their website:

“We are sorry but our CAPITOL HILL location is permanently closed. For great Armands Pizza please see our other locations.”

Only a matter of time? Thanks to Justin for sending: “Small sign says “for renovations”. This is Armand’s only remaining DC location after Tenleytown closed back in 2012. Capitol Hill is still listed on their website so we’ll see if the renovation is for real. Armand’s is located next door to Bagels & Baguettes which closed last February for a major building renovation. Still not clear if and where they will be returning.

fast gourmet

Lina Chovil comments on Fast Gourmet’s closure at 14th and W St, NW:

“For you that do not know the full story. The Brothers embezzled over $60k in 2012 to open up their Takeateasy joint. After only a year of being open we where at a loss due to the embezzlement the Oliveras did, the legal expense it took to remove them from the business. Not only did they cause our financial ruin but the family completely broke apart. And on top of that ABC forgot to mention why the payments arrangement was not honored. The rape of Lina Chovil on May 27th 2015 after leaving Mesa14 and only mention the debt amount with out any explanation of the fact. The DC treasure new about this but yet they decided to not care.. after I was hospitalized they took our licenses away and pushed us to male payments promising to give us our license back. Well they never honored their promise. That’s why we stopped selling cigarettes etc in the convenience store.

A restaurant was trying to maintain two business. The convenience store and the restaurant.

So there for those of you who ask why we did not pay our taxes. Blame the Oliveras and the individual that raped the managing partner.

Just letting you know what really happened.

The only one going to court is the rapist.

We cant sue the government, and well the Oliveras we decided not to pursue them criminally back in 2012 due to Juan’s son, we truly cared for his family.

Don’t worry We will be back sooner than you think.

Happy Eating!!”

Ed. Note: I was told via email that they will contact me when they have more details on coming back.

saint ex
14th and T Street, NW

Gotta respect the (relatively) old school still hustling. I always forget to mention them when I do my arbitrary best in DC lists but make no mistake, after all these years, Saint Ex remains very high on the list. Anyway hustle on Saint Ex, hustle on.

Sup $5 Moscow Mule?

From an email:

“Cafe Saint-Ex on 14th Street has a new weekday happy hour menu that includes select $5 draft beers, wine & cocktails, $3 Miller Lite & PBR cans, and a limited food menu that includes everything from $1 buttered popcorn to an $8 burger that can be upgraded with bacon, cheese or other toppings like grilled onions or mushrooms for just $1 each.”
