fast-gourmet
14th and W Street, NW

Remember last month when we said Valero had closed but Fast Gourmet remains open? About that. Thanks to James for passing on this story from ABC7:

“The popular 14th Street restaurant just shut down after the District revoked its tax certificate. District officials told ABC7 News the company owes more than $330,000 of taxes.”

fast gourmet

Back in 2010 a reader declared, and many agreed at that time that Fast Gourmet had the best sandwiches in town. RIP.

I agree! But why didn’t they pay their taxes??? Now I’m sad and angry.

        A response to our customers:
For you that do not know the full story. The Brothers embesled over $60k in 2012 to open up their Takeateasy joint. After only a year of being open we where at a loss due to the emblesement the Oliveras did, the legal expense it took to remove them from the business. Not only did they cause our finacial ruin but the family complealty broke appart. And on top of that ABC forgot to mention why the payments arangement was not honored. The rape of Lina Chovil on May 27th 2015 after leaving Mesa14 and only mention the debt amount with out any explanation of the fact. The DC treasure new about this but yet they decided to not care.. after I was hospitiƱized they took our licenses away and pushed us to male payments promising to give us our license back. Well they never honord their promise. Thats why we stopped selling cigarets ect in the convinience store.
A restaurant was teying to maintain two business. Thw convinience store and the restaurant.
So there for those of you who ask why we did not pay our taxes. Blame the Oliveras and the individual that raped the managing partner.
Dont worry We will be back sooner than you think.

    it’s all downhill from here

  • RegularFastGroumeter

So this is what happens when you start bumping the prices up at a rate not commensorate with food costs or demand. Also what happens when your quality shrinks and portions decrease. Also what happens when your staff are complete assholes. Can’t say I’m surprised. After the brothers left management of the place it was a sheer downhill spiral.

2010/2011 this place was straight fire.

    • asg

No, this is what happens when you don’t pay your taxes

      • Ben

        lol +1!

      • Hill Denizen

        Bahahahaha. YES.

    • prgkmr

idk it seems all that of is irrelevant to owing > $300,000 in taxes….

  • SEDC

I seriously want to cry…. I will be heading there tonight to pour one out them… CUBANOOOOO I WILL MISS YOU FOREVERRRR!!!!!!

    • SEDC

      *for them…. dang it

  • msus

I think the last good meal I had here was in June of 2012, but that might have been to me being very drunk and being that a-hole loudly signing Jeremey by OK with my equally drunk friend. To the both the restaurants and fellow patrons credit, no one complained.

Anyway, I went back a couple times during the 2014 world cup (and was sober) and thought the food quality had gone down a bit. Haven’t been back since.

  • MadMax

Back when it was pretty much this place or Ben’s for a late night meal on U Street they were far and away the best option (even if you were sober). I was never a fan of their chivito, but their meatball was outstanding, along with several other options. Then they sold the business to go open their own shop, and both places paled in comparison to their original self. It’s been a disappointing afterthought for many years now.

    • Hill Denizen

What happened to their other place? I just remember it having a really weird name.

      • PCC

TakEatEasy lasted about a year before closing in 2014. The space is now Nagomi Izakaya.

  • navyard

+1 for Angry about the taxes. Pay your taxes, scofflaw!

Quality dropped big time over the years. Mismanagement of food service apparently spilled over into tax payment. Besides, once I discovered G by Mike Isabella literally across the street, Fast Gourmet didn’t stand a chance. Those sandwiches are the best in the city.

    • dcd

      Agree re G. So good.

I followed the link to read the article on WJLA. She claims her partner stole $60k from the business. And apparently DC offered her some formulas for paying off the debt, all of which she rejected. So its more complicated than she just didn’t pay the taxes. When I went by last night the building was dark, but it looked like the pumps were back on.

  • oldhouselover

Never understood the hype about this place. Good but not great. Bub and Pops on the other hand… that place is pure sandwich heaven.

    • Jason

They were open until 5 AM on the weekends. I think it was in large part a function of drunken nostalgia. But deserved, because they had some basic convenience items like Gatorade that you just couldn’t get anywhere else nearby after hours.

  • So sad

Fast Gourmet made the best sandwich in the District, hands down. That meatball sub yo. Tragic.

To be honest, while I’d like to be sympathetic, hearing all about family conflict and blame doesn’t exactly make me want to go back if you reopen… :/ It sounds like an issue that should be worked out in court.

      • Lina Chovil

We are not looking for your sympathy. Just letting you know what really happened.

The only one going to court is the rapist.

We cant sue the goverment, and well the Oliveras we decided not to persue them criminally back in 2012 due to Juans son, we trully cared for his family.

  • Jane Doe

I definitely remember Lina and her husband; they were very nice. The Oliveras always hangover; they also bunkrupted the other place.
So sorry to what happened to you Lina; let us know when you open a new place and we will support you. Besides chivitos, u also had yummy colombian juices (lulo)

    • 14nw

Lina and her husband were crooks. They totally screwed over Nacho and his brother, and are STILL trying to blame them for their mistakes. All of this is just trying to make excuses. Glad to see karma has made its way back around.

      • LC

Hahahahaha lol!!! You mean your friends the Oliveras are crooks with their embezzled funds!! Lets go to court son!! I can prove every trabsaction! Including the ones spent at Camelot gentlemans club a few blocks away from their takesteasy joint!!

  • LC

Haha well actually we where not cooks!! Lol!! WHICH IS WHY nacho was even considered to partner up. We didnt even care thay they where both illegal immigrants, infact we where going to sponsor them!! But they got caught up with their yeyo/ periko (cocaine) consuption and their greed!! Look at their takeateasy joint it didnt even last a year due to the same shit!! Addiction to yeyo!! And on top of that the poor man who partner up with them for that venture lost everything and actually died of stomach cancer last year. Proves that everything they touch gets cuersed!! you should realy do some reaseach before you say anything first. And by the way we can prove the embarrassment in court! We actually should go aftert them!!

You tell your yeyo friends that!!

    • 14nw

Wow…Lina- you just can’t be mature about this huh?- you were all doing cocaine, you were all “friends”. Those guys were the genius behind the idea and you guys were the money to help get it going- when you realized it was about to blow up and be a hit you wanted all the attention and fame/money for
Yourself so you pushed them out- again- threatening to call immigration on them and bringing up drugs( which you ALL did) you are not a good person. But in the end you should have paid your taxes. PERIOD! You had already gotten away with screwing over the brothers, but greed ended up being your downfall, Yet again. It’s sad!

      • Lina Chovil

Hahaha is that what your friends told you!!? That is the biggest lie I have ever heard. Thank you for making me laugh!! Infact everything blew up when I found them doing it!! By the way I went to the police witth the prove back in March 2012. So you are either Manuelito, or Nachito, or one of their sucker friends.

You want to hide the facts because it tells the truth about your friends/family/you by saying that all of this did not happen.

Well let me continuue with the story.

So you know. Fernando Almiron was the one with the original idea of the restaurant in the gas station. He was at that time working for Mid Atlantic Petroleum Peoperties who at that time owned that gas station. Fernando and I where offered that location by the owner of MAPP Mr. Carlos Horcasitas ( funny thing is that Mr. Horcasitas actually adviced us to not partner up with Juan. He said he Was a leach, he was indeed) that was our mistake! Choosing a drug addict and looser as a partner. (Who brought his addict brother along to steal and snort everything!.) Thats when Fernando offered the partnership to Juan. This was in May 2009. When we cauguht the Oliveras stealing from our business and realized Manuel was in it to. Since he was soo upset that he had to put money into the business inorder to become an owner. Yeap!! He was irate!! Thats their excuse to make up things about fernando and Our marriage which yes it caused our separation and divorce. To take all the credit and not mention the one who
made it happen, for someone to claim ownership with out being an owner (Manuel) and not risking anything, for someone to steal business funds to fund your cocaine addiction and love for partying, to steal business funds in order to open another busines( yes they forgot to mention that they where going to open takeateasy, infact we found put online. They didnt even had the courtesy to say hey guys we have a new opportunity and we are going to do it. No, they did not say anything because that was the plan. Their plan was to convice us to sell so they could have both. NOW THAT IS GREED MY FRIEND!!. I am preatty sure this was all caused by Manuel.. He was so irate about not being an owner that he corked out. Now that is inmature!! Their actions where inmature and careless.

So since you seem to be so aware about what happened. Lets show the numbers. Numbers dont lie dude or dudete.. I dont knw what you are, you are hidding like coward behind your 14w name!! Hahaha shows Ihave more ovaries than you have balls!

Juan Olivera put $30k as his investment. He was making $2500 a month to start. We where not taking abything funds out for us since the businesa could not afford it. (By the way, that money was given by the Oliveras diplomat daddy.

Fernando and Lina invested )130,000 to open the place up, infact our house was placed as a gurantee for the lease 2009.

the offer was not intended for Manuel Olivera. He just jumped in like leach he is.

Oliveras embezzled $62k and change( that we can account for) there are transactions of $3500 in Atlanitx city from fast gourmets bank accounts!! Prove! BOOM!!

The lagal cost to get him out was a wooping $48,000

And on top of that we had to take a cashadvance out that costed the business of $86,000 to pay him $50,000 amd part of the leagl fees. (Never take a cash advance, they are horrible) we had too since we did not qualify for traditional lending.

Not to mention all the vendors that where unpaid by them.

So by summer 2012 Fast Gourmet was $196k in red.

You call us crooks and greedy. I am actually going to correct you on that. The CROOKS are Juan Olivera and Manuel Olivera. The Greedy ones are the Oliveras.

Karma has a beutiful way to show itself. Look your takeateasy joint! It could never be because its core was dicipful from the begining. It only lasted a year even after the Oliveras Invested the embezzled and sale transaction funds. That was a total of $110,000. I know the other guys that partnered with them in that venture and they lost everything too.

We tried with all the money and effort we had under the circumstances that we where under. We tried to pay evything that we could.
We had to to save our house to save our investment. Yes Fast Gourmet 1400. Location closed, but we still
Own the concept, the receipes.. ect. The managing company is the one in trouble, which infact is going to get resolved with the payment of the sale of our house. DBA is intact. So Karma my friend worked in our favor. Yes the gas station is closed. . Honestly we where dying to get out of there. Too many issues with the property. Something new and better is comjng to replace what once was.

See when you go into business there is always some risk invloved. In our case the risk was choosing the incorrect partner. We did as the other guys did too for Takeateasy. See the Oliveras don’t see that and do not understand it. They act carelessly because they have nothing to loose. In our case everything was under our name. So if they picked up and moved to Uruguy we would be screwed anyway. I know that for Takeateasy it was a similar set up.

Oh and on the tax thing.

        Here is the brake down.

        Taxes owed$149,000and change
        Penaltys $78,000
        Intereat $103,000

Yoy know thank you for motivating me to go to court and sue them for damages. They seems to be doing ok… both have ok jobs.. so thank you.. you are great.

Please respond with your REAL NAME!! Is such a weakness to hide and not show your face.. dont be a coward!!

        Happy eating!! mua!!
