Wowza. Thanks to Barred in DC for the heads up. Rumba wrote on their Facebook page:

“We are sorry to inform you that Rumba Cafe will be closing its doors on Sunday, July 2nd.
For nearly two decades, we have thoroughly enjoyed serving you with the best food and service we could provide. Many wonderful meals, parties, celebrations, and some of the best Latin American music performances have occurred here. (more…)

Thanks to all who messaged about Jenkins BBQ soft opening in the former Ruby Tuesday space in Columbia Heights. So far the very early word is excellent!

Sean reports:

“So far at Jenkins Capital BBQ: Smoky, meaty wings, crispy tater tots. Waiting on my pulled pork sammi w/slaw of course.

Pork showed up. Nice bark!”

Ricky reports:

“Walked past Jenkins BBQ in CoHi this evening and was surprised to see it finally opened! Since we were already looking for a place to have dinner we decided to try it out. I enjoyed my pull pork platter with Mac and cheese and tots. Also didn’t hurt that everyone gets 15% off their meal tonight and tomorrow, 10% off Sunday, and 5% off Monday. According to the restaurant, they are hosting their grand opening Tuesday, July 4.”

Right behind that cool little bridge behind La Colombe in the Manhattan Laundry building:

The liquor license placard for Maydan says:

“New Class “C” Tavern serving Middle Eastern food and offering alcoholic beverages. Total Occupancy Load of 135. Offering Live Entertainment.”

Also a reader writes:

“I follow the chefs of Compass and Maydan on Instagram. They are doing this crazy ass trip to Morroco, Lebanon, and Marrakesh to explore food for their new restaurant, Maydan. I’ve been watching their live feeds and photos since the trip started a few days ago, and, needless to say, it’s pretty fucking cool. If the food for their new restaurant is anything similar to their trip, DC is in for quite a culinary treat. I thought some other Washingtonians might want to know about it! Their instagrams are @maydandc @cmorgasbord @gmladdison.”

I remember when a time when nobody knew how to pronounce ANXO.

From a press release:

“The team behind ANXO Cidery & Pintxos Bar in Truxton Circle and the recently opened ANXO Cidery & Tasting Room in Brightwood Park makes its summer home on Barracks Row for an exciting pop-up: Porrón by ANXO! This concept is dedicated to our favorite way of drinking cider: from height, in abundance, and outdoors.

The 70-person space, designed by local DC artists No Kings Collective, emulates a summer day indoors with turf flooring and bright blue skies covering the ceiling and walls. Guests can enjoy porrónes of ciders or cocktails along the 18- seat bar, or on lawn and patio seating provided by No Kings. (more…)

Thanks to all who messaged us yesterday. One reader writes:

“This is big news for us in chevy chase- longtime businessman, mayoral candidate, and restaurateur choked to death at the palm last night. A controversial figure in upper northwest and across the city for decades.”

NBC Washington reported:

“A well-known Washington, D.C., restaurateur died after he choked while having dinner at The Palm Wednesday night.

Jeffrey Gildenhorn, the owner of American City Diner in Northwest Washington, was taken to George Washington University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. Gildenhorn was 74.”

Thanks to Michael for sending: “Au Revoir L’Hommage…Mucho Gusto Latin Concept.”

From the Mount Vernon Triangle CID:

Restaurateur Hakan Ilhan has announced plans to launch a new restaurant and a gelateria shop in the current L’Hommage Bistro Francais and bakery spaces at 5th and K Streets, NW. L’Hommage and the bakery space will close their doors on Monday, July 3, after operating through the July 1 and 2 weekend.

After undergoing a complete redesign and renovation, the L’Hommage space will become a yet-to-be-named Latin American restaurant with a menu offering approachable, moderately-priced foods from Mexico, Spain and other Latin American countries. In the current bakery space adjacent to L’Hommage, Ilhan will open a separate gelateria — already named “Gelateria Dolce Vita” — with delicious #gelato made in-house with the best possible ingredients. This will be the second location for Gelateria Dolce Vita, with the other currently operating on the Georgetown waterfront. (more…)
