Thanks to Laura for sending this great news about the former Ethiopian bodega spot across the street from the Petworth metro. The very early word on Yelp for Pho Viet USA is very very good:

“This new place is wonderful! Right off the metro so it’s in a great spot. Lee (who served us) is so friendly and awesome. He treated us to some of the egg roles and they were amazing. The Pho was pretty good too. Yummy jasmine tea! We’ll be eating here again!! Great addition to our neighborhood.”

From a press release:

“James Beard Award-winning chef Fabio Trabocchi and Maria Trabocchi–the DC-based husband-wife restaurateurs behind critically acclaimed restaurants Fiola, Casa Luca, Fiola Mare, and Sfoglina –are pleased to announce the soft opening of Del Mar, their Spanish seafood restaurant, at 791 Wharf Street SW in Washington, DC’s District Wharf. Now through October 31st, all food at Del Mar will be discounted 10% as Del Mar opens its doors to the neighborhood and the city at large.

Del Mar is a celebration of Maria, her Spanish heritage, and the Trabocchi family’s traditions created and preserved at their home on the island of Mallorca.

“Nothing makes me happier than sharing our culture of great Spanish food and lifestyle through Del Mar – from my family to yours, in a vibrant modern setting that resembles our way of life,” says Maria Trabocchi.

In September we lamented that Fish in the Hood had still not reopened after the terrible fire struck back in April. Thanks to all who sent the GoFundMe page that is now live (they are looking to raise $10,000):

“Bill White began Fish in the Neighborhood as a family business in 1996, taking orders out of a home kitchen. In no time, orders were coming in at two or three hundred each weekend. Our family eventually raised enough money to rent the building on 3601 Georgia Avenue.

For 20 years, we’ve been proud to serve great food with support from the loving people in this community. Fish in the Hood is a special place because we offer something for everyone, our customers include doctors, lawyers, politicians and actors, in addition to everyday people who just need a good meal. We love our customers, and we love to give back to the community we share. (more…)

Well this is a bummer. Thanks to Rebecca for sending an update from Eater DC on plans for ‘Chapter 2’ from the owners of Indigo:

“Indigo co-founder Dinesh Tandon says he and his wife, chef Nidhi Tandon, have split from other family members still working to open a new Indian restaurant at 3301 12th Street NE.

No word on what the substitute Indian restaurant still on the way will be called or when it might debut.”

From Masala Story’s Facebook:

“Hello Brookland,

Thanks to John for passing on from Eatsa:

“It’s with a heavy heart that we share with you that our D.C. locations are now closed. This was a difficult decision and not one that was taken lightly.

In our eagerness to get our experience in front of as many people as possible, we now realize that we expanded too quickly. We hope that with fewer locations, we can experiment and innovate faster, and come back to D.C. in the future. (more…)

I took a sneak peek of the new Jackie Lee’s at 116 Kennedy Street, NW and it’s time to get excited. Given the space and the people involved I feel like this has the potential become the Red Derby/Wonderland for the neighborhood. This is a very good thing. Stay tuned and in the meantime they are hiring servers and cooks. Those interested can email resume to [email protected].
