NO!!!!! A reader reports this morning:
“Smoked and Stacked is closing on Friday. I found out via their Instagram, but the post has since been taken down. Smoked and Stacked confirmed the news when I stopped by this morning.”

Smoked and Stacked opened to phenomenal reviews back in September 2016 in one of the Convention Center retail spaces. Pastrami. This one hurts if true. This one hurts bad. It’s unclear why the social media was taken down so hopefully there is a small chance for a miracle despite OP hearing in person that it’s true. Maybe? Pray with me?
Updates when more is known/announced.
Dave caught the announcement before it was deleted: (more…)

Thanks to Jessica for sending. I called to confirm and their phone number had already been disconnected. Zen Taco opened in the former Custom Fuel pizza spot (and Upper Crust Pizzeria before them) back in January.
Looks like the number of restaurant closures in D.C. is approaching 90 for 2018.

A couple of weeks ago, many of us, were devastated to learn that Soapstone Market would be closing at the end of the year. Someone in the comments noted that the space had already been leased. And kudos to you for that scuttlebutt sir/madam because leased it is!
From an email:
“Uptown Market is thrilled to bring our neighborhood market concept to Van Ness in spring 2019. You’ll find locally sourced and thoughtfully curated offerings like our fresh seafood market, butcher shop, artisan creamery, coffee bar and more. We look forward to meeting you and serving the Van Ness neighborhood, we hope you’ll come to shop and stay awhile.
Uptown Market is brought to you by the folks behind Bethesda’s popular neighborhood markets Butchers Alley and Pescadeli.”

From a press release:
“Award-winning restaurateur Ashok Bajaj of Knightsbridge Restaurant Group is pleased to announce the January 2019 anticipated opening of his latest venture, Olivia, at 800 F Street, NW, Washington, DC 20004. Olivia replaces Bajaj’s American brasserie concept Nopa Kitchen + Bar, which opened in April 2013 with excellent reviews from critics and patrons, as well as being lauded in the 2018 Michelin Guide for Washington, D.C. To give guests a taste of what awaits them in January, a daily special from Olivia’s upcoming menu will be featured during the month of December at Nopa Kitchen + Bar. Inquiring minds are encouraged to stop by the restaurant and sample tastes of what is in store for the new year, when Olivia opens in January, after a year in the making of this new concept.
Olivia, which comes from the Latin origin, meaning “olive tree”, will offer rustic Mediterranean cuisine that is inspired by the flavors of Portugal, Spain, Morocco, Tunisia, Italy, Greece and beyond. The new, harmonious menu pays homage to the many flavors and recipes sourced from the Mediterranean and Northern Africa. The menu will be comprised of a nice balance of innovative cuisine and traditional fare. A large portion of the menu will be produce-driven. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,
I unfortunately have food intolerances that require me to be on a restrictive, low FODMAP diet, in order to manage a long term digestive problem. It is NOT a lifestyle choice. Most restaurants are excellent at helping me to find something suitable. Chaplin’s Restaurant did a great job a few nights ago.
Last night I asked our server at Scott’s on F St NW (formerly Co Co Sala) if they had anything without onion or garlic, and I was told that everything had those things, but maybe the nuts and olives starter would be okay. (more…)

OK my friends, we’ve hit mid-December. And mid-December means approximately 1000 ‘best of 2018’ posts. I’m going to take some editorial license and proclaim So’s Your Mom the best thing of 2018. Sure they had a hiccup in 2016. They were still the best then. And many years before that. (more…)

Ed. Note: Hazel first opened in June 2016 and got their first Bib Gourmands from Michelin in October 2017 and got one again in 2018.
From an email:
“We just changed over our menu at Hazel, and announced a new chef, Robert Curtis, who has introduced a decidedly different culinary direction for the restaurant. For one, the dishes skew Mediterranean; a puffed laffa bread is meant to be used as a tool for the rest of the menu, and the majority of dishes are small, shareable plates, with some new family-style options as well.”

“Thought you might also be interested in checking out the new cocktail menu, as that has changed substantially. Spirits Manager Nick Farrell has followed Robert’s lead with a new set of cocktails”: (more…)
