From a press release:

“Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG), founded by pioneering restaurateur Danny Meyer, and creator of some of New York’s most beloved restaurants, cafes, and bars, has announced today its latest culinary concept: Maialino Mare. A coastal sister to the original Maialino restaurant opened in New York City’s Gramercy Park Hotel in 2009, Maialino Mare is a Roman-style trattoria with an emphasis on seafood pastas and whole-grilled fish. The new restaurant, located on the ground floor of the 225-room Thompson Washington D.C. hotel at The Yards, will be USHG’s first fine dining concept in Washington, D.C. Maialino Mare is slated to open this Winter. (more…)

“The most beloved tacos in the DC Metro are at a gas station.

Taco Bar is at the Shell station on Fields Road in Gaithersburg, MD. Here, taco tortillas are doubled (x2!), and the tacos are so stuffed that the filling falls out when you take a bite. The tacos are served unadulterated – just meat and tortilla. You can load them up how you want at the toppings station. Besides tacos, they have any matter of other Mexican entrees and sides, such as burritos, tortas, and refried beans and rice.”

I knew we had our next Friday Question of the Day. Especially after last week’s epic best breakfast sandwich discussion. So where’s your favorite spot – including the ‘burbs? (more…)

From a press release:

“An advertiser, a lawyer and an architect walk into a bar…

It might sound like the start of a joke, but it was actually the start of a successful DC pub. About ten years ago, Brittany Ryan (the advertiser), Matt Murphy (the lawyer), and Nick Bernel (the architect) were moonlighting from their day jobs at a Georgetown bar when their passion for the business led them to opening their first restaurant. The trio brought in Jeremy Gifford, another veteran of the same Georgetown bar fresh off of opening DC Reynolds in Petworth, as an advisor, and together they opened The Pub & The People, at the crossroads of Bloomingdale and Eckington on North Capitol Street.

The Pub, as regulars call it, was an immediate success, and has won either “Best New Bar,” “Best Neighborhood Bar,” or “Best Bar” from the Washington City Paper every year since opening in 2015. Now, that quartet is taking their winning formula across town to open Present Company Public House this weekend.

Present Company occupies an 1855 firehouse that was the oldest operating fire station in the District when it was decommissioned in 1974. The space has been redesigned with care and sensitivity to its history, adding modern touches while exposing the bones of the 19th century firehouse. Located at 438 Massachusetts Ave. NW, it straddles the line between Chinatown and Mount Vernon Square, and is just a few blocks from NoMa.

The kitchen will be headed by Executive Chef Lincoln Fuge, a Certified Sommelier originally from Nashville, who was most recently head chef at DC’s recently closed and much-loved 701. He brings with him extensive experience in upscale restaurants on both coasts — from Boston to Los Angeles — with names like Nobu and Todd English on his CV. (more…)

Inside 14th and Park Road, NW

Yesterday we wrote about the odd hours at the Z Burger in Columbia Heights. We got an update at 5:30pm yesterday from Katherine:

“Looks like it’s lights out for Z Burger. Just stopped by and no one was there. Fryers and grills removed, everything off, signage removed from doors, including the operating hours signage.”

Z Burger opened here back in 2013. Updates when we learn what becomes of the cool, historic space.

From OAG:

“Attorney General Karl A. Racine today announced that Turning Natural, Inc.–a local chain of juice bars–will pay more than $10,000 in unpaid wages to 22 employees as part of a settlement in a wage theft case with the Office of the Attorney General (OAG). The case, announced last July, alleged that Turning Natural failed to pay employees minimum wage and overtime, and failed to provide sick leave, as required by District law. Per the settlement, the company will return an average of $484 to each worker, and offer retroactive sick leave to seven current employees. Turning Natural will also pay $5,000 in civil penalties to the District. (more…)

14th and Park Road, NW

A reader reported at 6:15pm last night: “just went to Z Burger at 14th and Park in Columbia Heights and they said they were closed and the staff was packing up a bunch of stuff. Any rumors if they’re closing?” Ed. Note: Their listed hours are from 11am until 10pm. A call to the store this morning at 11am rang repeatedly but there was no answer or voicemail.

Anyone hear anything? Z Burger opened here back in 2013. (RIP Nori Sushi, Mayorga Lounge.) Updates if/when there is something to this.

5th and K Street, NW

Thanks to Sherri for sending these new signs up under the Cloakroom in Mt Vernon Square. Thanks also to Matt for sending: “Looks like Richard Sandoval is opening a new place on 5th and K NW, below the Cloakroom. Coming soon.”

I believe it’s either going to be called Tequilaria or Wood burning kitchen :) Updates as they get closer to opening.
