“I wasn’t entirely certain it was a shooting until I saw the faces walking past me looking concernedly over their shoulders. saw a child with his father, about 5 or 6, sobbing while walking away – he must’ve seen it – it was particularly disturbing, this was about 6:30pm – crime scene tape was there about an hour later, folks collecting casings I imagine.”

“1 victim, bleeding badly from apparent leg wound, taken in ambulance”

“Dear PoPville,

I wanted to alert you to gunshots fired that took place at lunch time Friday right in front of the Shaw playground at 7th and P St. You can see the yellow markers showing each shell casing. A total of 6 shots were fired. When I drove by and asked the police what happened all they said was “destruction of property.” I was so disappointed by this response that I walked back demanding to speak with the office in charge. Only when I pushed did they admit it shots were fired right in front of the playground. The even more concerning thing was that they seemed to be cleaning the scene up quickly so it was as if nothing happened. A few minutes later all police presence was gone.”

“Dear PoPville,

I have tried without success to find the DC Police clearance rate when it comes to murders, shootings and robberies. In Chicago, the police only clear 4% of shootings and 14% of murders. To remedy this, they are considering adding more detectives. I live in Park View and in my personal experience, I rarely see any of these types of crimes cleared. The police say they don’t track these stats. [Ed. Note: I’m sure they must track homicides clearances, maybe they don’t share it with us but surely they track it, no?] Obviously other cities do, so why don’t we? How can anyone possibly track success or failure if these stats don’t exist?”

King via GoFundMe

“Dear PoPville,

On April 30, King, who is three years old, was shot three times in a drive-by shooting at 18 Place NE. King is in a local PK3 class. We didn’t even hear about it until his teachers sent a note home last week.

GoFundMe fundraiser

King is expected to recover, but is going to be in the hospital for a long time and has a tough road ahead of him. We’re devastated for him and his family and also really shocked that this hasn’t gotten more media coverage.

Here is the story from the Washington Post.

They’ve got a few of the details wrong (he is 3, not 4, and was shot three times not once). But other that the original report of the shooting, this is the only coverage I’ve been able to find anywhere.

We’ve set up a GoFundMe to support King’s recovery, with the permission of his family. 100% of the money will go to his mother on his behalf.

“Dear PoPville,

Captured a video of someone walking down the street with a bag full of goodies already, stopping in our yard to help himself to another package the UPS delivery guy stashed in the bushes. If anyone recognizes this guy please contact MPD where there’s a report already on file for him. (Oh and if you live in Capitol Hill and happened to have a package stolen Saturday afternoon, this might be your guy.)

Cops said they recognize him but haven’t been able to catch him in the act yet. He’s been known to become violent when approached, so call 911 if you see him rather than confronting. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

I live in the Shaw area near Giant, and last night awoke at 3am to some non-rat-related sounds in our back alley. I took a peek outside and three men in their twenties were riding down the alley on bikes and stopped under the lamppost about two doors down from my house. One man proceeded to start scratching/scrapping at the stem of the bike, as if he was trying to get something off. The other two men hung around and helped each other look over the fence of a backyard nearby. The man scrapping pulled something out or put something in a nearby trash can. Other than the scrapping, they were very very quiet and did not speak (I’m surprised I heard them in the first place). From the way they were acting, I suspected they had just stolen the bike but I did not see them commit any crime. The more I looked, the more the bike he was working on looked like my own (locked in my backyard), so I sprinted downstairs and opened my back door. (more…)

“Dear PoPville,

Heads up- my roommate was assaulted today near the intersection of Kenyon and 11th Street. She was walking along at 11am this morning and a guy literally just punched her in the side of her head and kept on walking. He didn’t go for any valuables or even enter into a dialogue with her. Just a literal punch and run (walk) away while she was stunned and trying to stop her ear from bleeding. She filed a police report with MPD. (more…)

Back in February we posted “Thankfully the cyclist had pepper spray”:

“Feb. 19th: I watched a convo between a cyclist in a bike lane on G St and 13th and a driver escalate to him pulling the cyclist off his bike, and beating him up. Thankfully the cyclist had pepper spray, since my screaming at the driver to stop didn’t do anything.”

The victim updates us:

“the US attorney’s office decided not to move forward with the issuance of a warrant to arrest the suspect despite the officer applying for one and having a witness. Good to know that people can assault people in DC and, as long as a camera didn’t catch it, they can simply deny it and walk, even when someone else sees it.”
