Well they haven’t opened up yet but we have a strong contender for future best dive bar in town – Ivy and Coney opens January 1st:

“The Team from Ivy And Coney is happy to announce our official opening date will be January 1st/New Years Day!

To get things started we will open early at 10am for our version of brunch with a small bowl of Fruit Loops – possibly milk- and a shot of Jameson and all the Hot Dogs you can eat!

We will have all the liquor we promised (including Malort) and on tap 312, Two Hearted, Old Style-ish, and Strohs in Cans. Prices start at $3 and stop at $6!

The home of Mediocre Beer and Great Hot Dogs is ready for you!”

back seating (including TV and nintendo)

The no frills spot is getting rarer and rarer in these parts so I’m super psyched for this spot. It doesn’t hurt that it comes from one of the owners of KBC (among others).

So a quick layout – it’s located on the second floor – you walk up the stairs and there is a big bar toward the right with some additional seating facing 7th Street. In the back is a lounge area that also has a tv – there are three big tvs for Cubs and Tigers fans. Of course they will show other sports but those folks have preference. In the summer there will be a roof deck off the back. To start there will be hotdogs but you can see the menu here (including drinks.) You will find no artisanal goat cheese here – you will however find some sweet sweet wallpaper. A welcome addition to the revival to the Shaw!

From an email:

“On Black Friday (Nov. 29) at 9 a.m. 11am ET Connecticut Ave. Wine & Liquor (1529 Connecticut Ave NW) in DC will begin offering a variety of 2013 Goose Island Bourbon County Brand barrel-aged beers to eager consumers including two new offerings – Barleywine and Backyard Rye.

During last year’s Black Friday release in Chicago, more than 400 people lined up outside a local retailer to purchase the 2012 offering of these barrel-aged beers.

The originator of the entire bourbon-barrel aged beer category, BCBS is an imperial stout that was first produced in 1992 in honor of the 1,000th beer batch at Goose Island’s Clybourn brewpub. Since that inaugural BCBS brewing, Goose Island has released several Bourbon County Brand variants, including Coffee, Vanilla, Bramble Rye, and Cherry Rye. The Friday after Thanksgiving, craft beer connoisseurs can begin experiencing the brewing-and-aging expertise in the 2013 vintage of the following selections of Bourbon County Brands (more…)

Now I’m not one who gets easily excited by new… ok, just kidding, I get very excited about new openings all the time. Having said that Right Proper is the real freaking deal. I believe this has the potential to be the coolest thing to come to Shaw since Duke Ellington used to hang out here. And I’ll be honest, I meet a lot of nice people opening places. A few are a bit douchey but the vast majority are extremely nice. The guys behind Right Proper are the nicest of the nice. It’s hard to explain, and you’ll get it immediately when you meet them, but they just have a genuineness and kindness without pretense that makes you want to root for them. And the fact that this is a brew pub makes me want to root for them even more. Fortunately as you’ll soon see from the photos – they don’t need my rooting – this place is already awesome and it’s opening December 10th (if all goes according to plan, knock wood, knock wood.)

We will revisit when all is cleaned up but this will give you a taste of the space. There is room for 155. When you walk in you’ll see a small bar, another small bar then in the back a large bar with a view into the brewing area. The back will also have proper tables. There will be 6 right proper brews and two guest taps that will rotate. And you can buy beer to go! And murals. And awesome details. Well have a look:

Well this sounds awesome:

“the story….
For the past two years we have been pestering Boundary Stone to feature a cheesesteak special. The idea itself is conceptually mind-blowing…….DC’s very own Boundary Stone Public House of Note, relying on their Philadelphia roots, to produce a cheesesteak the likes of which DC has never seen.

Chef Vin and Co. always insisted they would love to do it but one detail kept them from creating this gift for the people…….THE BREAD. Chef Vin insisted a cheesesteak without a roll from Sarcone’s Bakery would never come out of his kitchen. This was indeed the truth.

Seasons past, springs turned to summers and summers to falls. Finally, we could bear it no longer. DC Brau co-founder and fellow Cheesesteak Enthusiast, Brandon (More-Cheese-Please) Skall agreed to drive to Sarcone’s in Philadelphia and pick up the freshly baked righteous rolls and drive them poste haste DIRECTLY to The Stone.

now boundary stone and dc brau give you…
