Duccini’s is located at 1778 U St, NW. I’m always on the hunt for good pizza and we’ve certainly discussed the topic at length. But I think it’s worth exploring good slices of pizza. I enjoy Moronis and Red Rocks etc. But sometimes I’m just looking for a slice. I think hands down Vace’s (Cleveland Park) has the best per slice pizza. Pete’s (Columbia Heights) is also good. But I’m wondering if there are other good per slice places. So how’s Duccini’s? Any other recommendations for per slice spots?

After yesterday’s post about Radius at the Ohio on H Street, NE a reader cleared a few things up and passed on some info about Radius on Mt. Pleasant Street, NW. As some commenters previously mentioned it seems the Radius at the Ohio is on hold and it is not clear if that project will go forward.

As for the Radius in Mt. Pleasant, I’m told it has been sold! But apparently it will remain Radius pizza. I’m told it is closing for a few days on Sunday for some renovations. I’m not sure how long “a few days” is but I’ll be sure to post when it officially reopens.

“Dear PoP,

Angelicos’s pizzeria is now open in Mt Pleasant. It’s at 3205 Mt Pleasant St, just north of Lamont. Here are a few photos…While there are a few tables, it seems more a takeout/delivery place & located conveniently (at least for me!) just a few steps away from the end of the 42 bus line. I met the manager Selim & he said they just opened yesterday – their web site still says this location is “coming soon.”

And the pizza, well someone with a more discerning pizza palate might want to weight in. I got a slice (more like 1/4 of a pizza) & it was foldable, cheesy, and tasted like pizza. Filled me up for $3.85!”

I’ve noticed this sign at Pete’s in Columbia Heights a number of times. So I asked someone at the shop who were they quoting as “Best Pizza in DC”, City Paper? Washingtonian? Nope they are self declared. There was a weak explanation that many of their patrons tell them it is so. Brilliant! Don’t get me wrong I like their pizza and all but I think it’s a bit disingenuous to declare oneself the “Best”. I guess I’m troubled that they used quotation marks. Although, next week City Paper will release their best of issue so maybe they’ll win for the pizza category…

Props, of course, go to Som Records on 14th Street.

Ed. Note: Som Records has recently become an advertiser on PoP.  The selection of album cover of the week is in no way influenced by their advertising.  I simply love their selection of album covers.  As always reader submitted album covers are not only accepted they are encouraged.

Over the weekend the Post wrote an article titled: Petworth Pizzeria Fills a Void Tastefully. I went to grab a pie this weekend and congratulate Jose on the nice article when he told me about his window getting smashed. He seemed to have good spirits (even showing me the above photo that his friend took of him). But still this is so frustrating. Someone finally opens up a great spot on Georgia Avenue and has to deal with this bull shit. Cause it was pure vandalism not even a burglary (thankfully). It just really pisses me off that here the guy gets some good news and that very evening his window gets smashed. It’s not fair. Life’s not fair I guess. Well, it’s gonna cost a lot of money to replace so if anyone is hankering for pizza this week make the effort to support Moronis located at 4811 Georgia Ave. And of course the pizza is phenomenal so everyone wins!

I have to admit only having been to Matchbox‘s original location a few times. Not because I didn’t enjoy it (I did) but more because it just didn’t occur to me that often. With their opening on 8th St. SE (Barracks Row) that is set to change.

The Hill/H St. area is sorely lacking in pizza places. The upscale pizza craze has largely ignored the area until now. Even the planned Radius at the Ohio on H St. seems to be tabled in favor of a Tonic. Apparently the city’s pizza purveyors don’t think we have any interest in their wares over here. (In fairness, I am a big fan of the very traditional pizza from Bistro Italiano on D St. NE behind Schneider’s, and Armand’s isn’t terrible. Regardless, there certainly isn’t a glut of options.)

Matchbox opened on Friday the 5th, and I made it over for dinner on Sunday night. My friend and I got there just before 6, and were seated right away, but about 10 minutes later, the place was packed and stayed that way until we left. Not bad for a cold Sunday night. People familiar with the Chinatown location will recognize the similarities. What my friend (formerly a Hill resident, now a denizen of Southwest) and I most noticed was the variety of patrons. Lots of families, lots of folks watching the Steelers’ fourth quarter victory over Dallas at the bar, young couples and groups of friends all patiently waited to be seated or dined leisurely on the pizzas and burgers (I saw so many trays of burgers go by, it almost made me question our choice to split a flat-iron steak pizza.) The food was excellent, the service was speedy, and despite the fact that there was clearly a wait, we didn’t feel rushed to leave. Continues after the jump. (more…)

2 Amys is located at 3715 Macomb St., NW. I’ve eaten here once and the pizza was pretty good but damn it was noisy as hell. Because of that (and location) I’d pick Moroni’s, Red Rocks or Pete’s any day of the week over 2 Amys. But in terms of pizza what do you guys think – how does 2 Amys compare?
