750 E Street, NW (back in February)
From a press release:
“Today, Matchbox announces a July 3 opening for its newest location, a 4,360-square-foot space at 750 E Street NW in Washington, D.C. The homegrown chain recently closed its original Chinatown restaurant at 713 H Street NW to welcome the Penn Quarter arrival, which is located just three blocks away and boasts a 28-seat sidewalk patio in addition to 125 seats indoors. Fueled by its investment funding from Thompson Hospitality, Matchbox will continue brand-wide growth in the region with stores slated to open in Bethesda, Md. later this summer and in Reston, Va. in early 2020. I’ve been meaning to kick off this series but keep forgetting about it. God bless the week between Christmas and New Years which seems to move at a glacial pace. So for fellow D.C. restaurant/history nerds – have I got a treat for you! My in-laws rock and got me an amazing birthday gift a couple years ago – a mounted set up of all their old D.C. restaurant matchboxes (they moved to the area in the mid-60s and are avid restaurant goers.)
Obviously we must start this series with the legendary Duke Zeibert’s.
521 8th Street, SE
The liquor license placard says:
“Applicant requests renovations for an expansion of 1600 square feet with addition of 45 interior dining seats, 14 bar/counter seats, and six exterior patio seats.”
Las Placitas is now located at 1100 8th Street, SE.
517 8th Street, SE
The sad news comes from Capitol Hill Corner:
“The owner of the building housing Barracks Row institution that is Las Placitas at 517 8th Street, SE, will not renew the restaurant’s lease when it expires in October, and Matchbox – located next door – will expand into the space.”
Fortunately for huge fans, and for 16th Street Heights residents, work is progressing on their 4724 14th Street, NW location:

From a matchbox press release:
The lunch menu is an extension of dinner service, with the same menu of perfectly portioned wood-fired pizzas, sandwiches and mouthwatering entrees that neighbors and visitors have already grown to love. The restaurant will offer fresh and unique creations like a sweet & tangy calamari salad and a sesame crusted tuna salad with rare ahi tuna, fried carrots, sake marinated cucumbers and roasted peanuts along with local favorites: a jumbo lump crabcake sandwhich with roasted red pepper remoulade served on a toasted brioche roll and a prosciutto & black mission fig pizza with roasted garlic, mozzarella, gorgonzola and the perfect amount of black pepper.
matchbox 14th Street’s full menu is also available to-go for carry out lunch orders. Situated on T street, a separate “To-Go” entrance makes picking up orders a breeze. It sits at the rear of a 65-seat patio slated to open in late spring complete with a fire pit and plenty of people watching. The expansive bar and seating at the pizza ovens will also be open to dine-in lunch guests, where a menu of 23 beers, eight wines and prosecco on tap can tempt anyone headed back to the office (or not).
As of Monday, February 11 matchbox 14th Street will offer lunch daily starting at 11am. Brunch is also served Saturdays and Sundays from 10am – 3pm.
