Are these signs legit?

“Dear PoPville,

Wondering if you could take a look at the above photo and weigh in on whether it’s legitimate. These appeared Sunday (11/11) on both sides of our entire block in Shaw. While parking will be unrestricted in the evenings, the 7 AM start time screws over everyone who leaves for work at a later time than that, and to restrict parking on both sides of a whole block seems like a lot. What’s more, these parking signs don’t look like the usual ones I’m used to (maybe because it’s tree work, but I’m not sure) and I’m not sure enough notice was given. Am I overreacting or missing something? What say the readers?”

“Dear PoPville,

I’m car free so don’t drive much, but recently rented a car for some errands. In the middle of a block on 11th street, I got into position to parallel park, checked my mirrors and noticed a bike and some traffic coming up behind me. As I waited for the traffic to pass (a pause of no more than 5 or 10 seconds), the biker became irate, cursed at me for being in the bike lane, and swung something (I couldn’t tell exactly what) into the side of the rental car, leaving a significant dent and scratch.

Because I don’t drive much, I’m trying to figure out if I made an etiquette or rules mistake. (more…)

“Have you ever heard of this?”

“Dear PoPville,

I usually pay my parking tickets without a fight (even the really questionable ones), but this seems like a whole nother level to me. Have you ever heard of this? I got this in front of the church at Shepherd and 8th NW. It’s particularly irritating as I am consistently blocked in on weekends by double parkers at that church.”

I guess it depends if there were emergency no parking signs posted with appropriate notice?

Advisory Neighborhood Commission (ANC) 1D/Mount Pleasant voted to endorse a plan to repave and restripe a section of Park Road NW, from the bridge over Piney Branch Road in Rock Creek Park to just past the intersection with Walbridge Place. The plan, as presented at the September 25 ANC meeting by a representative of the District Department of Transportation (DDOT), would eliminate several on-street parking spaces in the neighborhood, which brought some local residents to the meeting to object.

The ANC’s resolution to urge DDOT to proceed with the plan includes a suggestion to refrain from putting a “Stop” sign and a “No parking” sign at the corner of Park Road and Pierce Mill Road, which would create a new 40-foot long area (about 2-3 car lengths) where parking would be unambiguously not allowed. Apparently, parking occurs there now, but Emily Dalphy, DDOT Transportation Engineer, said that parking in this area might already be “technically illegal”. (more…)

How Does this Even Happen in a Parking Lot?

A reader reports yesterday:

“I went to Giant Foods in Columbia heights to buy some groceries and I saw this mess in its parking garage. I was told it was a fourth car involved which was all destroyed, besides the truck that caused the accident. That happened on Saturday but I went on Sunday afternoon and the cars were still there.”

“Dear PoPville,

Just a quick heads up to my Navy Yard peeps. A neighbor watched construction workers posting these signs right around 10am. She was questioning the fact that cars were already parked there. You can see it was printed yesterday and they literally posted them after the restricted time began. I’m fortunate enough to have garage parking, but just wanted to give a warning to anyone parked on I (eye) street, SE between half and 1st Street.”

“Dear PoPville,

We live in Dupont. I can’t remember the last time anyone got a parking ticket, even when “creatively” parking, especially at 2:17am. The infraction just says “12 ft from stop sign.” Which I think means that even though there is no sign indicating that parking is prohibited, I should have known better than parking too close to a stop sign.

DC has done a great job of confusing the issue with inconsistent signs – or in my case no sign – over the years. It looks like the 25 feet from a stop sign rule is still on the books but is applied inconsistently. (more…)

Council Members Parking Poorly But Legally For Them Vol. 89

A reader sends Council Member Brandon Todd’s car Saturday afternoon: “On Upshur street during the petworth day festival. Worth noting there were various spots a block further away.”

Ed. Note: We’ve previously learned that Council Members are not obligated to follow parking regulations however they still shouldn’t park in front of fire hydrants. Also, it just really pisses people off but bigger fish to fry I guess.
