“Mixed messages parking

I faced this dilemma at close to midnight at 8th and G, NE, with no other parking available in the neighborhood. Decided to risk it.”

“Dear PoPville,

I live in Brookland which is parking zone 5. My building offers private parking in a garage but it costs $300/month and the spots are in high demand (there’s a long waiting list). When I got a car recently, I decided to forgo the costly parking garage and take my chances street parking instead. Much to my confusion, I’m being regularly ticketed for parking on my own street. The tickets cite “residential parking” and “no residential parking permit.”

When I contacted the DMV for clarification, I was told that because of my street address, I do not qualify for a residential parking permit. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

Not a DC resident, but I do spend a lot of time ferrying my partner to medical appointments in Foggy Bottom. We hate cars too, but when he has a medical procedure, he needs to be driven (and prefers not to be vomiting in the vehicle of a stranger so that knocks out rideshare). I’m a #freeparkingisntfree adherent so I’m down with paying for parking, but why doesn’t DC make it easier? Read More

“Dear PoPville,

Scores of these vehicles are literally parked taking up the entire right lane of these thoroughfares during rush hour! It adds like 40 minutes to my commute every day.

I do not see them being towed. I have seen some of the same cars with tickets but they always come back.

Because my commute, I’m specifically concerned about the ones around the mall, but perhaps there other hotspots too.

How is this allowed?”

Ed. Note: Wait, what? I’ve never seen a parking space intentionally designed to go into the cross walk, what the heck is up with that?

“Dear PoPville,

As I have many times before, I parked in a legal street spot on 21st and R streets NW. The space is designed to protrude slightly into the pedestrian crosswalk. However, this was the first time I’d gotten a ticket here. Read More

“Dear PoPville,

Someone at Chaplin’s parks his very large Mercedes SUV in the same tow away zone located directly in front of the main entrance at the corner of 9th and P St, NW every time they visit and/or is working at the location. They are not loading/unloading; rather they park there the entire day. The place where they park is clearly marked as NO STANDING OR PARKING ANYTIME, yet every time I pass the restaurant, the same black SUV that belongs to them is illegally parked and to the best of my knowledge, has not received a ticket or been towed for parking illegally. This illegal parking creates a potentially dangerous situation should emergency vehicles like fire and/or EMS need to access Chaplin’s or the surrounding structures. Read More
