Official Word and more details from NPS: “Meridian Hill Park has a new armillary sphere”

From NPS:

“The National Park Service (NPS) has installed a new armillary sphere on the lower plaza of Meridian Hill Park.

The new sphere is a replica based on the original armillary sphere approved by the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts (CFA) in 1929 and present in the park from 1932 until the late 1970s. The original sphere was 6 feet 6 inches high, 5 feet 8 inches in diameter, 17.79 feet in circumference and weighed 1,250 pounds. It was the focal point of the southern end of Meridian Hill Park. NPS removed it because of damage and vandalism. The pedestal remained in the park and will serve as the base for the new sphere.

NPS oversaw the re-creation of the new armillary sphere, which was designed using historic photographs and drawings. (more…)

NPS Still Seeking Funding for Fountain…

Thanks to Terry for passing on the latest update about fixing the Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park Fountain, from NPS:

“The National Park Service is seeking funding for the repairs to the cascading fountain at Meridian Hill Park. Work needed to be completed before the fountain can operate includes additional rehabilitation of deteriorated concrete and replacement of the variable frequency drive water pump.”

Still Waiting on the Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Fountain to be filled 2024 edition “who can we talk to, or advocate, to get these fountains back on and this park the attention and care it deserves?”

“Serious question re: Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park – who can we talk to, or advocate, to get these fountains back on and this park the attention and care it deserves? It’s a shame this space just sits here like this year after year to no avail – the city deserves better.”

“They are line placeholders for the queue for food banks that hand out weekly meals”

“Dear PoPville,

I was walking in Meridian Hill/Malcolm X Park last Monday (3/18) and I noticed this line of trash and sticks on the upper level towards the Joan of Arc statue on the 15th St. side. I was also at the park that weekend and didn’t see it then, but I think I have seen something similar there in the past. Does anyone know what it is?”
