In the post about the reopening of the lower section of Meridian Hill park you commented that it was the first time you had seen NPS use the term Malcolm X Park. There is a sign by the entrance to the lower plaza that explains that despite the popular usage of Malcolm X Park, they can’t change the official name because the park contains President Buchanan’s memorial,
and apparently there is some rule against naming a park with a presidential monument for another person. They didn’t specify where that rule comes from.
The sign looks pretty old, from before the recent construction, so it looks like they acknowledged the Malcolm X moniker for a while.”
